The fuel shortages caused gas to be very expensive. As a result, driving a car was much less of an option more many people than they had been previously.

People began to turn to their bikes as their primary means of getting to and from work. Many people who began biking during this period discovered a new passion and continued to competitively bike after the oil embargo ended.

The constant use of bicycles resurrected a wide interest in how the bicycles worked because these machines would need repaired every so often. The recumbents and fairings were a especially targeted with intense examination and drafts for improvements.

Four years later, the mountain bike was created. This early mountain bike was produced in Marin Co, California which is located slightly north of San Francisco.

The designers of this bike are reported to be Joe Breeze, Otis Guy, Gary Fisher, and Craig Mitchell. They were also responsible for building and promoting these bicycles.

A year later the oil prices once again rose and another return to bicycling was once again seen. This year more bicycle were sold than cars in America. The triple chain-ring cranks had become very popular and available to the general public across the US.

Improvements were also made to the bicycle during this year. The main improvement was the addition of gears which increased the available number of speeds on a typical bicycle from 15 to 18, 21 or 24.

This was also the year that Jacquie Phelan organized the Women’s Mountain bike and Tea Society(WOMBATS) in order to help women begin mountain biking as hobby that was fun, but not competitive. Phelan was a three-time national XC champion.

Two years later, in 1986, the Department Viagra Jelly of the Interior and Nielson surveys the population of the United States about bicycling. It is discovered that the third most popular form of exercise is bicycling.

Four years later Shimano, a Japanese bicycle engineer, added the brake and gear levers to the bicycle. Sachs (SRAM) also created the PowerDisc, which was the first hydraulic disc brake system that could be produced on a large scale.

Two years later, Campganolo created the first bicycle with a 10 cog rear cluster. This rear cluster makes 30 speed bicycles possible.

The improvements in bicycles over the years have not only filled the practical need of an inexpensive form of transportation and commuting, but they have made the world of exercise and competition more diverse. Many people have received health benefits, saved money, and pursued a worthwhile life through the use of bicycles.
