Get Started With The Email Marketing Basics Today

A few months ago, way back when I was starting out, I wanted to find a way to build my opt-in lists. Since I did not have much money, I decided to check out some of the freebies available from other people’s sites.

Now, you probably know what happened here. I started getting my email flooded with crap and promotions from other marketers trying to sell me on their programs. It was terrible. However, I took it as an opportunity to see how other people were running their own lists. I learned a lot by doing this, mainly by seeing what others where doing that I could not stand. All the rest had the same problem. They talked about providing value, and helping people, but they just didn’t deliver. They were doing the same crap everyone else was. If you are running this type of list, Stop! Start providing some value to people.

Also, make sure that your giveaway, and your emails are TARGETED to your market. Let me give you an example.

I signed up for a list for an email marketing training. They talked a lot on their blog about providing value, and creating a product that is worth selling to give away. I liked a lot of what he shared on the blog, and I learned a lot from there. I signed up for this training program expecting to get even more value than I was getting for free on his blog.

I was once again disappointed. Now, he did have a great training program put together. The problem is that it was targeted to newbies, and yet, NOW that I have a list built up, I am just to the point where I can start using it.

Your giveaway has to meet the needs of your target market. Now, most of the giveaways I got were just fluffy pdfs or junk software that didn’t work. In this particular case though, it was a good program, but it was for people who already had a list, and knew the basics already.

I was looking for information on things like how to create my giveaway, how to set up a squeeze page, what type of keywords to target, and basic information. After all, I had never built a list before, and I needed to know where to start.

I learned a lot about how to get your list to buy, how to leverage your list to get a bigger list, how to get a JV to swap lists, and techniques to scale things up, but nothing on how to get started.

If you want to target a specific group of people, you need to look at what those people really need. Market research is CRITICAL.

Make sure your give away is a good product. Make something that you would want to sell. Then, give it away for free.

Now, you all hear about building a list of buyers, and not freebie seekers. Well, although I agree with this, you need to start somewhere. Building a list of buyers is a lot harder to start off with. Start with the basics, and then funnel that list to your product, and your buyers list. Besides, having this list is a great place to get some feedback on your new product before you try to sell it.
