Miami Heat Tickets – Bosh Makes Heat Conference Title Contender

As of early July 8, LeBron James had yet to publicly declare which uniform he will wear for the 2010-2011 NBA season. Though it’s still possible that LBJ could team up with Wade and Bosh in Miami, Heat fans already have a lot to be excited about, even if they don’t add the league’s best player to the roster. In fact, with the addition of Bosh and some extra cap space, you can argue that the Heat would be better off not to sign King James at all, even though his presence would sell an unbelievable amount of Miami Heat tickets.

Assuming that James doesn’t come to South Beach, Bosh still elevates the Heat to become one of the top teams in the conference. Last season, without much talent outside of Dwyane Wade, the Heat still clinched the fifth seed in the East, though it was clear they didn’t have the overall skill and depth to compete with the Boston Celtics in the first round. With a general lack of playmakers and shooters around Wade, not to mention a lackluster start to the career of Michael Beasley, the Heat were in desperate need of a skilled big man to provide some court balance. In Bosh, they certainly have their man.

After spending seven seasons in Toronto with the Raptors, Bosh has established himself as one of the best power forwards in the league. His combination of post moves and shooting touch allows him to be a threat both with his back to the basket and facing up, giving the Heat plenty of offensive options outside of Wade. As the Lakers have proven with Pau Gasol, having a diversely skilled big man with good court vision makes role players considerably better, which is what should happen in Miami.

But the nicest thing about the Bosh signing for the Heat is that Bosh will be the perfect complementary player to Wade, even though Bosh has proven that he can be the number one scoring option. Clearly in Miami he won’t be the number one option, which should make him even more efficient overall. The scary thing is that Bosh’s court presence will allow Wade more room to operate. Without Bosh, Wade was already all but unstoppable, as proven by the 26.6 points and 6.5 assists he put up last season.

As for LeBron, signing him to a max deal would require the Heat to really scrounge to fill out the rest of their roster. Though it’s possible that some players will take less money to play with the new Big Three, the reality is that the Heat would probably be left with a group of sub-par role players. No matter how dominant LeBron, Wade and Bosh would be on the court at the same time, defense and depth eventually get exposed in the playoffs and the Heat would still be far from a lock to win an NBA title in 2010-11.

A better option for the Heat other than LeBron could be to use the rest of their salary to sign sharp shooters. Players like Ray Allen, Mike Miller and Kyle Korver are all potentially available, and each would make a deadly combination with the post presence of Bosh and the ability of Wade to get into the lane. Signing a couple top-tier, defensive-minded bench players would also give them a better chance in the long haul if winning championships is the goal, which it should be.

In other words, it would be easy to be blinded by the unbelievable star power of a team with LeBron, Bosh and Wade, but the other nine players on the roster still need to be able to ball at least a little for them to be perennial title contenders.
And the last perspective is that LeBron signing in Miami would probably be bad for the NBA.

As evidenced by teams like the Lakers and Celtics, the NBA has turned into a league where a balanced team with solid defenders is now required to win championships. A three-headed conglomerate in Miami could potentially undermine this formula, which has made for compelling playoff drama and a throwback to old-school, team-first basketball. The Heat have already developed a nice nucleus in Wade and Bosh. Adding LeBron would be a circus and the irony would be that he may not even make them a better overall team.
