Organizing a Fantastic Management Retreat

Many companies like to have management retreats in an attempt to have a superior way of working. Often everyone is so focused on their own work there is no way people can stop to look at the bigger picture. This is what should be everyone’s goal as it doesn’t matter about individual success as long as the company achieves what it is meant to.

So you want to have a productive management retreat so people learn something and then come back to work with a new way of thinking. Often many of the problems stem from communication of a lack thereof. If you have a better appreciation of how other people in the company work and what they require you may be in a better place to interact with them.

The first thing you need to do is to have some sort of ice-breaker that is going to get people in the mood. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as people relax and drop their guard. Often a good idea is a game of some sort of problem solving that requires team-work. It could be a game of bingo or memory – it doesn’t really matter as long as people are communicating and talking.

Then you can get to the serious matter at hand which is analyzing problems and issues and trying to rectify them. You can identify points where inefficiency and wastage occur. Often the problem in a workplace is a lack of motivation. If people don’t have the right motivation they aren’t going to want or succeed.

If you implement the right forms of motivation, people are going to put in the extra hours. This is because the hard work and the sacrifices are worth it. If there is no difference to operating at 100% or 60% then people aren’t going to go for the latter. They are going to do the basic because they don’t see a difference between the two.

Should Facebook be banned during work hours? This is something you may want to look at. Some people may work hard and then want to relax by playing bingo with their friends for a bit before returning to work. The problem is that not everyone has this discipline. So ultimately the only way to do this is to allow some to access it but this in turn can create bigger issues.

You want people thinking about the bigger picture and coming up ways with how things can be done better and you won’t get this when people are so entrenched in their day to day ways. So the management retreat should allow people to address these issues. You want them to be able to contribute to forum which encourages ideas. If this happens they are going to be more forthcoming with ones.

Often workplaces are bogged down by politics. People can get the credit for things they didn’t do or the wrong person gets the blamed. This can’t always be helped because when you have a group of people politics is present. If you want you can try and address it but it is hard to make an impact because of the way that it just exists.
