You may have heard many horror stories about the price of European holidays, but a European city break can still be achieved on a relatively modest budget.

Accomodation
Finding a cheap European holiday can be approached in a number of ways, depending on what you see as the most significant and variable factor. Accommodation usually forms a key part of a holiday budget, so this is often a good place to start. City break bargains include Prague, Budapest and Dublin, with Amsterdam and Barcelona in close second, while Venice, Paris and Rome are among the most expensive hotel rooms in Europe.

However, as with cheap flights and airfares, cheap accommodation can be found in all these loations if you look for a last minute discounts. As a general rule, smaller cities are generally cheaper than large ones, so perhaps consider Bruges, Haarlem or Rotterdam.

Booking apartments instead of hotel rooms is a good way of saving money, particularly if you are travelling in a group.

Travel
Price comparison websites are a good way of saving money on flights, with returns to top European cities varying between ten and two hundred pounds.
Another way of saving money on flights is to consider flying from different airports, such as Stansted or Bournemouth for example.

Eating
All-inclusive holidays can be a good way of saving money if you spend a lot of time in a hotel. The great European cities – Paris, Venice, Rome, Amsterdam, Prague and Barcelona – have stunning landscapes and architecture which can be appreciated best by foot. Staring at train lines or traffic queues is no way to spend your holiday, so why not join the locals on the pavement, with all the excitement and adventure that it can bring.

Attractions
Going on tourist excursions can often be costly, so avoid some of the costs by organising your own travel to the attractions themselves. Public transport is usually much cheaper than tourist coach trips and will often lead to more authentic experiences.

Money
The method of payment you use when paying for things can also make a big impact on the price of a holiday. It is usually cheapest to pay using a credit card. Try to avoid using cash machines, and if you do use one try to use a cash card instead of a credit card.
