Collegeville Periodontists Uses Immediate Load Implants

COLLEGEVILLE AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – Technological advancements are changing the way many dental procedures are performed, and one area where that is particularly evident is in dental implants.

Advances in nano technology, have facilitated bone cells to adhere to titanium surfaces faster, thus enabling Dr. David DiGiallorenzo to place healthy, beautiful teeth into the mouth in one visit.

DiGiallorenzo, a Collegeville, PA dental implants specialist, has performed these procedures for 15 years. A full mouth may take a half-day, while a single tooth replacement can be completed in less than two hours.

Immediate load implants are implants that can bear the forces of an anchor and a dental crown immediately after being placed into the jawbone with 97 percent long-term success, said DiGiallorenzo, whose PA periodontics practice has offices in Collegeville and Williamsport.

Historically, the original protocol was to wait six months prior to loading the teeth. This protocol was developed by the Swedish orthopedic researcher Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark more than 25 years ago.

“What we found clinically and scientifically, is that if the forces where controlled properly and the implant installed with a different criteria, we could still achieve fusion of the bone and implants through a process called osseointegration,” DiGiallorenzo said.

One of the greatest benefits of dental implants is adding them to an existing denture patient, he said. Doing so enables the denture to be locked down, eliminating the need for sticky, smelly, messy adhesives and often removing much of the plastic on the upper roof of the mouth.

“Patients can really enjoy their foods, love life and have a lot more confidence with this procedure,” said the Collegeville, PA periodontist.

Immediate load implants also are a great option for fearful patients, DiGiallorenzo said. Any time fearful patients can reduce the number of trips they must make to the dentist, they are happy.

There are additional benefits. Patients also save money when the procedure can be completed in one visit. In instances where a patient must have a tooth extracted, DiGiallorenzo can reduce bone loss for the patient by immediately placing the implant after removing the tooth, he said.

Not everyone is a candidate for immediate load dental implants. You must have good quality bone structure. However, if you have a thin jaw bone, Digiallorenzo will regenerate lost bone structure with the latest vampire technology where the patient’s own blood proteins are taken and processed to facilitate optimal healing.

“When we place a dental implant, we are shooting for optimum results,” he said. “That means that the patient needs to be in good general and oral health.”

If gum disease is present, it must be treated with the latest laser treatment called LANAP, which stands for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure. DiGiallorenzo described it as highly effective and added that it involves no cutting or suturing.

For patients who are smokers, DiGiallorenzo offers several smoking cessation modes within his practice, including hypnosis, nutrition and pharmaceutical treatments.

“We want to create a good foundation before we perform the implant placement,” he said. “And we’re willing to do what it takes to get our patients healthy prior to performing the procedure so that they will be happy with the end result.”
