Better Air Intake Means Better Car Performance

Air intake kits provide multiple enhancements to any vehicle\’s engine. Engines rely on a mix of fuel and air to create the combustion reaction, and the original car manufacturer designs the intake system to run as quietly as possible. While quiet running is of benefit, the many twists and turns of a typical manufacturer\’s system means less air is taken into the combustion chamber. Because the mixture is fuel-rich, the engine does not run at maximum efficiency.

Cold air intake kits pull a higher quantity of cold air into the engine. With more air than fuel in the combustion mix, engines run at higher efficiency, allowing drivers to get more power out of every drop of fuel consumed. Most kit manufacturers advertise a horsepower increase of between five and 10 HP, but the actual amount will depend on the engine size, the make of the vehicle, and on other installed performance components.

A performance kit will provide a noticeable boost to the vehicle\’s throttle response. With the manufacturer\’s system, the fuel-rich combustion chamber causes cars to run hot and sluggish. With more cool airflow in the combustion chamber, cars will take off more quickly from stops.

By improving the fuel-to-air ratio, kits make vehicles more fuel efficient. However, drivers who use their improved car performance as an excuse to constantly put the pedal to the metal will erase all of the gas mileage gains from their performance kit. Instead, drivers should maintain the same driving habits while enjoying that extra bit of power at the pedal in a responsible manner.

A new cold system will use a conical performance air filter. The conical design means that the filter has more surface area, both for drawing in air and trapping dirt and debris. The cloth surface of the performance filter is oiled to allow it to capture even more dirt and debris. Even through the oil, and through the captured debris, the cloth allows more airflow into the system than the paper in a traditional filter. The result is a higher volume of cleaner airflow inside the engine\’s combustion chamber.

Intake kits are designed to restrict airflow as little as possible while looking great in the engine compartment. Pipes are mandrel-bent, which means that as the pipe is bent, the diameter of the tube does not change. Because the diameter remains the same throughout the pipe, the airflow through the pipe meets with little restriction.

Kits are designed to be easy to install. Drivers will remove the manufacturer\’s intake system, including the tube and air box, and install the new kit using a standard socket set and a couple of screwdrivers. After installing the new kit, drivers may want to think about additional performance airflow parts, including throttle body spacers and mass airflow sensors.

Cold air intake kits will boost horsepower, improve throttle responsiveness, and enhance fuel economy. Cold kits will supply the engine with the coolest air possible, but they may not be contained completely within the engine compartment. For more everyday-use vehicles, a standard kit offers most of the improvements of a cold kit while allowing for easy installation and full in-compartment containment.
