How to Do Furnace Repair

When it comes to heat, and its applications in our daily lives, its importance cannot be stressed enough. Apart from the fact that we need heat from the sun to survive on earth, other activities, both economic and domestic require heat in order to take place. These activities range from cooking to smelting of metal ores and manufacture of glassware. These activities are made possible by heat generation in furnaces. When these furnaces break down, furnace repair is then called for.

Heat has many sources, for example wood, coal, diesel, nuclear fusion and other sources. Coal is the most common type that is used in industry for heat production. The fuel must be burned in order for heat to be produced. Special types of burners re used for this. These are called furnaces. Furnaces sometimes break down due to the stress they undergo, but this should not be cause for worry as with guidance, you could solve the problems easily.

Gas leaks will probably occur if your furnace is gas operated. Be prepared for any gas leaks and be on the look out. Gas is pretty easy to detect because of its strong odor. Move out of the building as soon as you detect gas. Leave the door and windows open to let the gas escape.

Some early versions of both fuel and gas operated furnaces have in built pilot lights which may break down and refuse to stay on. The problem may be in the thermocouple, which may need merely readjusting or replacement. A clogged orifice may also cause such a problem. This easily solved by using a thin wire to unclog it.

Another problem may be that the furnace produces very little or no heat at all. This could be as a result of a dirty filter which should be replaced immediately. A thermocouple that is not correctly set may also be a cause. Increase the temperature a bit and wait to see whether the heat increases.

There could be several reasons as to why your furnace will not light at all. Tripped circuit breakers and blown fuses may be the culprits. Check all electrical panels and boards, ensuring everything is okay. A malfunctioning thermostat may also be the problem. If the system is a both heat and cool system, make sure that thermostat is set to heat.

If the flame refuses to light up, a clogged fuel intake system is the most probable cause of this in the case of a liquid fuel operated system. For a gas fueled furnace, turn off the gas supply immediately and make sure it is on pilot. Hold it down as you light the flame and let go after a few moments, firing it up.

It is advantageous to know and understand furnaces if your work around them. You will end up saving a lot of money in the long run and you will not be out of commission and helpless for long if you can solve simple problems by yourself. Furnace repair is really dependent on the type of problem which has occurred. Simple problems can easily be fixed without much hassle.
