What Are Dental Implants?

While it is everyone’s hope and goal to keep all their teeth for the entirety of their lives, this just isn’t always a possibility. Accidents happen, gum disease happens, tooth decay happens; many things can happen that result in you losing one or more teeth. When you find yourself needing treatment to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth, you may be presented with a few different options. One of the options that are available in many cases are dental implants. Getting dental implants isn’t a simple or inexpensive procedure, but it is a permanent and effective way to fill in the gaps and give you a natural-looking smile and set of teeth.

Essentially, a dental implant is an artificial root that is set right into your jaw bone so it can hold a replacement tooth or teeth. Dental implants don’t rely on neighboring teeth for extra support, which makes them a preferred way of replacing teeth for many people. The dental implant cost can be quite high, but the results are usually good. In many cases, you can work out some sort of financing plan with the dentist and make payments so you can get the procedure done without having to wait too long. There are three different types of dental implant your dentist might use to fix your teeth.

One is called a subperiosteal dental implant, the second is a root form dental implant and the third a plate dental implant. With the root form dental implant, the artificial tooth screws right into the root. With a plate form dental implant, a long plate is implanted surgically into your jaw bone. This type is often used is your jaw bone isn’t wide enough to perform the bone grafting required for a root form dental implant. With a subperiosteal dental implant, a plate is used like the plate form, but it is positioned on top of the jaw bone and under the gums. The healing time for dental implants varies depending on which type you get, but it can take up to six months to be healed up completely.

In order to be eligible for any type of dental implants, you’ll have to be in relatively good health, and free from serious conditions like diabetes. Smokers may also be told that they don’t qualify for dental implants. Aside from the spots that need new teeth, your oral health must also be good, and the dentist must feel confident that you can maintain a clean mouth in the days and weeks after the dental implants are put in. Getting an infection after the surgery is completed is something you want to try and avoid at all costs.

Dental implants certainly aren’t for everyone, but they are a viable option if you’re missing some teeth and want to have a permanent replacement that is stable and looks like the real thing. With a dental implant, the only person who needs to know that you have anything at all is you.
