Life Without Golf

Ever since my younger years, I have always been a competitor. I play to win. If we got a new game for Christmas, I would not let anyone else play until I figured it out. I played to win. Even on the sports side, I would practice enough to be competitive in the sport. Then, there was golf. Golf beats me every time. It is a game of thought, strategy, and patience. I may not have the patience until I get older.

In the Army days, a lot of the junior officers would get together and play golf on weekends.I would play for the fellowship. I learned quickly that I was awful at this game. I don\’t mean high score terrible. I mean that I was sorry in all areas of the game. Well, I was pretty good at taking score. Sometimes, the small square wasn\’t enough room for my double digit score. I could hit the ball straight. I just had problems getting it in that little hole.

The first thought behind the game was that I could get better. Initially, I worked on my putting game on putting green. I became a pretty decent putter. There was that obstacle of getting to the green so I could putt. I could drive the ball straight. The straight drive was only about 150 yards at a time. There were times when my ball did not go airborne. My ball would be a 50 yard ground ball that only the shortstop could make a play on.

The years have gone by and I just broke 50. It is time to get back to the golf world. I don\’t want to. I am thinking about waiting until I get a little older. Golf has been the game that conquered me. I know it is very relaxing for some. It is not relaxing for me. It is man versus small white ball. In my calming later years, I will give it another go.

This time I will get my own set of golf clubs. At least, with this start, I will be very familiar with my own clubs. Instead of starting on golf course, I will start on driving range. This is not for driving distance. This is just to work on staying calm. I figure control of emotions and clubs will be a new positive stretch. In the past, I won all of the club throwing contests. In the near future, I only want to throw my club because it has slipped out of my hand.

My second step will be golfing on a par 3 course. I figure there will be less stress on a shorter distance course. There is a chance that I can just use irons to get on the green. We will know soon. It may be the best way to grow business. It is the sport of the business person. This is definitely true in 2015. There is more success in a leisure business meeting on the golf course than a lunch meeting. Playing golf, you can talk business and family the whole time. We will see.
