Switching Schools is Not Much Fun

By the time I was a senior in high school, our family had relocated 10 times and I was in new school number 7. I think I am one of the few people that went to four different high schools. Moving into new houses and getting situated into a neighborhood was not too bad. The switching of schools was not that much fun.

Just like people are different everywhere, schools are different too. It goes a little farther than ethnicity and background of the folks. I know that the first high school move took me from New York to Detroit,Michigan. It was a big change for me. Mom had just switched jobs and we went out to join her. We had a house that was close to a park which was nice for sports. School was a change. I think I weighed about 80 pounds as a sophomore. I was pretty small. I was on the wrestling team. My time on the wrestling team was simply practicing and improving as I took a lot of beatings. It does keep you in shape though.

A nice part of this move is academics were not too tough so that transition was smooth. I made a few friends in classes and in the neighborhood. Our neighborhood was simply our block. This move was okay overall. Right before junior year, we moved about 15 miles away to a different neighborhood along with a different high school. To me, it was a tougher neighborhood with its own group of cliches. We did have a middle school and playground down the street to hang out in. It took a little longer to get in stride at school. I constantly had people asking me for money at lunch. On all days, I only had enough money for lunch only.At least, I did not have to fight over a quarter. Junior year went pretty quickly. I was already tired of moving but I did enjoy the good folks in the neighborhood.

At the end of the school year, we received new news. We were moving to Southern California as Mom had just received an offer out there. Keep in mind that my knowledge of California was television. All I thought of was pretty girls and the beach. Another nice thought was good, warm weather all year round. I figured that I would be okay without the snow and the cold. I had plans in Michigan for senior year however I was pretty excited about going to California. The move would make me a resident for the local California universities and help keep college costs lower.

California was different. The schools are set up where you are outside most of the time. The only rooms indoors were the classrooms, office, and the gym. Even in school, you were outside a few hours a day. I started off having to take a few California required courses with the sophomores. They were not a big deal. I made some friends in class and the kids in the neighborhood went to the same school. I was a lot better wrestler as a senior. Bottom line, senior year would have been a good year no matter where I was.

For me, the focus was getting all my college applications in on time and getting ready for college. I will not say that I am a fan of moving. I am not. Changing schools is not that much fun. I did enjoy the move cross country to the west coast. After to getting to the sunshine, I ended up going to college back in the east coast.
