A Dog Whisperer Speaks Volumes

Dogs are a man’s best friend. Most people enjoy being around dogs. Dogs have been known to do heroic things. Some people, like Leona Helmsley, leave their fortunes to their dogs when they die. It’s hard to think of a dog as a creature that could do serious harm, unless it was attacked or facing grave danger.

There is a man who is known as Dr. Phil for dogs. Cesar Milan creates amazing rehabilitation of all kinds of dogs including aggressive, scared, lazy, compulsive, and even jealous dogs. He has a television show on the National Geographic Channel (NGC) called Dog Whisperer. The show premiered in September of 2004. Soon viewers came to the conclusion that it was not the problem of dogs, instead they are the owners that needed Cesar’s help the most.

In the hour long episodes, viewers got what they were clamoring for. They had a chance to view Cesar’s remarkable rehabilitation for the dogs. They also got to see Cesar train the owners. Transformations would take place with no prior information or preparation on the case. Cesar was the last resort for help. The owners felt they were facing a crisis.

In addition to working in the owner’s homes, Cesar sometimes brings the dogs to his Dog Psychology Center. This may be why people compare him to Dr. Phil. He has the dogs undergo Power of the Pack training. The dogs meet the resident dogs. There may be as many as fifty dogs at a time. These dogs were once thought as much as dead, but Cesar uses them to train other dogs.

Cesar calls dogs who like to run away from their home yards “escape artists.” He believes they are bored or frustrated. The dog feels like the back yard is a jail. When he gets free, he does what dogs do naturally. He walks about, sniffs things, and explores the world at large. The dog is more satisfied with this new arrangement.

Cesar says escape artists are dogs that are naturally active. The owner must try to keep them busy. They can’t be left without some activity. This means these dogs need a lot of exercise. Taking them for a walk is fine, but it might not be enough.

Another important thing for owners to consider is claiming space. This means you want to show the dog what you want control over. You have to establish a bubble of space that tells the dog who can enter and who can’t. Once you let the dog know what area is your space, the dog will respond in a better way and behave according to the rules. You will have to communicate with an inner dialogue that lets the dog know what you want. This can be done through body language.

Dogs love families. They enjoy the concept of family. When they live in the wild, they become part of a pack. They become a smooth functioning unit. They form a trust and loyalty. Human families fall short of these abilities. When we make a dog a full-fledged member of our family, we can make our own human family stronger. Cesar Milan is working for this goal all the time. He is helping dogs to become better family members. He is bringing owners and their dogs together in a unique and special way.
