Blackboards – Why They Are Still Relevant Today
Blackboards have been with us for well over 300 years. They were the first effective way to visually present information to a room full of people all at once. Blackboards remained unchallenged until the 1980’s with the advent of whiteboards.
Whiteboards have become increasingly popular in schools, colleges and are ubiquitous in almost every office and boardroom. However as new technology comes on stream the presentation media continues to evolve and interactive whiteboards are now the preferred method for multi media presentations.
So what is relevant about a 300 year old idea in the fast moving, multi-media 21ST Century?
We see them everyday outside pubs and clubs advertising an array of different events or offers. Blackboards Kamagra Soft hang on the walls of many restaurants to display the various menu options and to inform customers which football match will be showing or which band will be performing. Blackboards have become a cheap and effective advertising medium. Indeed there are professional blackboard artists and marketing companies that focus solely on this business, producing vibrant and bold designs for a host of different products and services.
But blackboards still have their use in the classroom. Teachers and other educators of the young believe that the profile of the blackboard surface has just enough resistance to help children to write effectively. The slickness of whiteboards has been shown to be a far more difficult proposition for young writers.
While it is true that interactive whiteboards are an effective and popular tool, they can be easily damaged leading to costly repairs and are expensive to buy in the first place. Blackboards are comparatively inexpensive and while this is also the case for standard whiteboards, they offer a number of advantages over these.
The white background can cause contrast issues for those with vision or learning difficulties. The bold white on black contrast on a blackboard is far easier to read. Chalk also produces uniform makings throughout its lifetime and generally lasts a long time, however whiteboard markers rapidly fade with use until they become too faint to be visible. It is difficult to gauge how much ink is left with a marker pen, whereas chalk visibly reduces in size with use. Chalk is also much cheaper than whiteboard pens. Chalk is easily washed out of clothes and hands unlike dry wipe makers.
Blackboards are easy to clean with felt erasers or a damp cloth whereas harmful chemicals need to be used to effectively clean whiteboards. Both these chemicals and the pens themselves have a strong pungent odour. Chalk is odourless and has been shown to contain no toxic substances and you will never have to go shame faced to the caretaker because you used the wrong type of ink.
While all the various presentation media have their place, the blackboard continues to hold its own and will probably still be in use in another 300 years. I wonder if the same can be said for the rest.
Moores have been established as a blackboard and message board manufacturer since 1977. Based near Ludham on the Norfolk broads we enjoy all the delights of living and working in a beautiful part of the country
We have been manufacturers of noctice boards for most of that time but blackboards quickly became one of our strongest selling lines which is why we have developed, and continue to develop, an increasingly comprehensive range of blackboards to suit all needs.
