Why Hair Loss Occurs and How to Prevent It

Many people think that there is no reason to worry about hair loss because they feel that “if it happens . . . it happens”. This is not the proper way to look at it. In the majority of case you can prevent it from being lost. This article will briefly describe the different ways follicles can be lost, as well as how to prevent hair loss if possible.

Before describing the types it is important to know how you lose it. Hair grows through a follicle and goes through two phases. These phases are called growth and rest. Hair goes through the growth phase for anywhere from 2 to 6 years growing at an average rate of 1/2 inch per month. After the growth phase is over the rest phase begins. During the rest phase it does not grow at all and will eventually fall out and be replaced with a new follicle, therefore starting the cycle over again. Balding occurs when hair does not grow back into the follicle. This can happen for a wide assortment of reasons.

In some cases it will not grow back in because you are not taking good enough care of it. This does not mean that you are using the wrong shampoo or conditioner; it simply means you are pulling it too tight or styling it too much. If this is the cause of balding, it most definitely can be prevented. When hair is lost this way the simple preventative measure is to style it in a different way or not pull it as tight when putting it up.

Other times it is lost because of a bad diet. When people do not get enough protein and iron in their diet their hair will not begin the growth cycle. This also has a preventative method. By eating foods that are higher in protein and iron you can prevent balding for this reason. By eating foods with a good amount of protein and iron you will allow it to be healthy and not malnourished.

The next type of balding is due to medication. Some medications may cause you to lose your hair because of a side effect. The preventative method to this is simply to not take the medication, however this is not normally recommended. You will obviously have to keep in mind that it is a side effect, but a doctor should always be consulted before not taking the medication that has been prescribed.

The last type of loss to be discussed is loss due to hereditary issues. Sometimes if someone in your family has experienced this type of problem you will too. If this is the cause for you, than there is no preventative treatment. People that experience it because they have inherited it from a family member cannot prevent it from happening.

Hopefully this article answered all of your questions on the preventions of this condition. By taking these preventative measures you will be less likely to experience it. It is important to remember that this condition can be prevented in some cases, but not always.
