Blogging Shouldn’t be a Chore!
While blogging is perhaps one of the easiest ways to get involved in life online, getting it right is not such a simple thing. Anyone new to blogging is always given a ton of advice by people who are already doing well on the Internet. Most of this advice is sound, but every now and then, people get sucked in by so called ‘experts’ who promise an easy ride into the Blogosphere.
The truth about blogging is actually a lot less complicated than most people believe it to be. The one simple tip that eludes most people new to blogging (either that or they choose to ignore it) is that to succeed you must practise self discipline and put together a simple blogging schedule that allows you to get your work done on time every day.
Blogging only really works as regards establishing presence if you are actually online a lot. This means producing lots of regular content for your readership. The more you do this, the more your readership will ‘tune in’ to hear what you have to say, and consequently they will pass on your details to other readers, link to you, and generally make you more popular.
Blogging is a popularity contest in the end, and the most popular are basically the most read. So it stands to reason that if you have more stuff out there then you will be read more. This does not happen overnight and the only real way to establish yourself and get more of your stuff read is by producing regular updates on your blog. These posts should be scheduled into your daily life so that they become part of your routine. If they are not scheduled, they simply will not get done after a while. You will have an off day, and forget to post. Or you just might not want to post one day. This will make your blog, over time, feel stale. The real secret is to keep producing fresh content every day, or every other day at least.
Some people write better in the morning. The wake up experience gets their juices flowing creatively, and they relish the opportunity to get their thoughts down on the screen. For others, late at night is the best time to get their blog moving forward. Whichever time you are best suited to, make that time a regular, daily thing if you can.
Make each daily session last the same amount of time. Even if you do not write the same amount every day, you can certainly plan the next day’s work if you finish early. Get the coffee going, settle down into your chair and be happy with the fact that you are finding a regular outlet for your thoughts.
If this sounds like too much like hard work, blogging is hard work. But if you don’t make it a regular routine, it will get even harder, as your blog never takes off, and dies a death within a few weeks.
