All About Motorcycle Safety Clothing

When deciding to ride a motorcycle, motorcycle safety clothing is of the utmost importance. This is because it has been designed to minimise damage to a person in the event of an accident. For those who choose not to wear this type of clothing when riding, there is a possibility of serious injury arising, simply because a motorcycle is not like a motor car, with some protection around the driver.

It is a death trap where the rider usually ends up being thrown from the bike. This may cause broken bones, dislocations, bruising, abrasions of the skin, head injuries and perhaps death. Protective clothing has been designed in the way of boots, jackets, gloves, pants and the helmet. They can be made from Kevlar, leather and nylon.

The boots are designed to protect and minimise damage and injury to the feet, ankles and legs. It needs to be made of tough material like leather or synthetics, which is strong but moderately flexible. The design needs to be made with an ability to absorb and spread energy and impact, handle cuts, tears, abrasions and be burst resistant.

These boots need a rubber based, oil resistant, stiff sole which will not collapse in the case of a crush or strain in an accident. It needs to have a heel which is not too high, but wide enough to help keep the feet on the pegs, as well as allowing the rider to grip the pavement while standing.

Jackets and pants are usually made from leather with armour, which is situated on the areas of the body which receive the most impact. These are the elbows, shoulders, knees, hips and back. This armour, which is designed to absorb energy and spread impact is usually made from carbon fibre, hard polymers, which are foam backed, and high density foam. Some clothing also uses an airbag system designed into it.

Gloves are most often made of leather and can have a gauntlet, which is protection built into the glove to protect the wrist. It can also help reduce the drafts felt in cold weather. The palm of the glove is often reinforced and this can minimise skin abrasions in the event of an accident. There are also other options such as weather proofing, extra protection and insulation.

The helmet is the part of the safety wear, which is the protection for a riders head in a crash. There are three different types, the open faced, where this helmet is designed to protect all the head, but not the face. Second is the full faced, which protects the whole of the head as well as the face and lower jaw. The third is the flip faced, which is a full faced helmet but has the benefit of being able to flip up the front for communicating, removing and putting on as with the open faced type. These are made so the rider can see properly, can also hear, and in the case of an accident it will not cause unnecessary neck damage to help survival in a crash.

If you are thinking about riding a motorcycle in the near future, then why not take all precautions and buy the proper clothing. By doing this you may just help save your life if you have an accident.
