Oak Creek Ranch School: VolleyBall Program
For 38 years we’ve been helping Under motivated Teens, Academic Underachievers and Students with ADD ADHD reach their full potential. As one of the top ADD ADHD boarding schools in the country, we provide individualized programs, small classes, and a highly experienced faculty. Our programs are designed to help teens achieve their academic goals while gaining valuable social and interpersonal skills. The school’s Leadership and Character Development program teaches under-motivated teens the importance of being responsible, keeping commitments and treating themselves and others with respect.
Success. “Success” is one of those words that inspire hundreds of different definitions. Some people define success in the monetary sense; the more zeroes and more commas in front of the decimal point, the more successful a person. Some people define success in the form of popularity; bylines and cover photographs and high society is what it means to be successful. And some yet see success in the form of records; the 1985 Chicago Bears were successful, touting a 15-1 record to include a Super Bowl victory against the Buffalo Bills.
The Oak Creek Ranch School volleyball team deems success in a different way. At the beginning of the season, Coach Hansen told his team he hoped for three things: skills improvement, teamwork and for everyone to gain the ability to lead.
“Don’t be surprised if I challenge you as a team and ask you to coach yourselves,” said Mr. Hansen. “Some of the best ways of learning come from leading, instead of following.”
A 0-6 record quickly ensued, with three matches a week, sometimes double-headers. The first game of every match started off rough, and it wasn’t until the middle of the second game when things started to come together. Of course, by the time the Wildcats found their momentum, they found themselves behind in the score and often beaten mentally. This was the same song and dance, the same story, until something in the team triggered what Coach Hansen defines as “success.”
The game was at South Ridge, a private-boarding school outside Cordes Junction. The Wildcats lost the first game by a few points, but came back in the second game to earn their first win, followed by a win in the third game as well. They lost the fourth game, forcing the match into a fifth game. Coach Hansen reminded the team about the three things he hoped for, adding that the skills improvement and teamwork was evident.
“All right, ladies,” Mr. Hansen said, setting the clipboard of line-ups on the ground. “Who’s up to lead?”
Senior Andreana Guffey stepped up and grabbed the clipboard and immediately started creating a line-up, placing pride and self-sacrifice above anything else. Rotations went around, everyone played and, despite a narrow loss, the OCRS Wildcats walked away with their heads held high.
Coach Hansen sees a new team hit the court each match; each time better than ever, more fun than ever. He couldn’t bear to have things any other way, despite a lackluster record. Even though a winning record isn’t in sight, he can’t imagine coaching another team.
