The Modernisation of Street Furniture and Their New Use
The streets and highways are filled with street furniture that helps motorists and pedestrians navigate the street easier. These street fixtures have become undoubtedly useful on the streets. The government has paid for the manufacture and installation of these fixtures for the benefit of the public. However, they are contracted by different business enterprises. By contracting private enterprises to manage these fixtures, these enterprises are responsible for the constant changes in the fixtures. For instance, the telephone booths are repainted, the lamp posts are extended, and the benches are repaired and repainted too. However, the functions and contribution of such fixtures still remain the same. Some private enterprises did not even bother overhauling the furniture that you meet daily on the street. Others still look the same in their traditional style. There were no radical changes made to these fixtures that could have excited and added colour to the public spaces.
Yet, as time passed by, little innovations are making their way into these pieces of street furniture. This could be because many urban settings are already making waves with the new appearance of their public spaces. However, the changes are still more visible in each piece of furniture. One very visible example would be the use of park benches in areas other than the park such as in schools, malls, parking lots, and even in private home gardens. These long benches are seen to be practical fixtures aside from having room for new designs and even structures. Another example of the changes in this now modern furniture would be the innovation of advertising billboards. Instead of plainly bearing those huge posters, these are also used as waiting sheds with their newly added benches and roofs. These innovative billboards can be usually seen in bus loading/unloading points. These recent innovations would make these fixtures more noticeable as more people would see further use or benefit in each one of them.
Going back to the traditional street fixtures, there was one big problem that the public had to endure – lack of maintenance. Public toilets would be defective. Telephones in telephone booths would not work. Lamp posts would only serve as posts without their lamps. Traffic lights that do not function could cause traffic jams. Lavatories cannot be used too due to lack of cleaning services. With all these problems in the cities, these cities would no longer prove to be attractive places to visit or come by. When this happens, no one would be encouraged to visit the city.
However, the city council could not just stand idly by. Instead of only letting private enterprises make regular changes to these fixtures on the street, even maintenance are delegated to them too. If the city government could not cater to the maintenance needs of these useful furniture pieces, they would be better handled by private companies. This is when positive developments started to take place. There are now modern restrooms, automated traffic lights, attractive street signs, and secured booths are only some of the major positive changes on the streets. These developments have managed to let the cities hold on to their local and foreign tourists. Positive feelings among the public are also ignited with the use of beautifully made benches and well-made garbage cans. Thus, city streets are now more interesting than ever.
