BLS or Basic Life Support is a basic course for any Health-care Professional. It includes the basic skills to recognize the life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), relieve choking, resuscitate a drowning victim etc. You learn to perform these basic tasks in a proper, safe and effective manner in the pre-hospital phase.

This course is basically intended for health care personnel like paramedics, fire-fighters, police, nurses, elementary first aid volunteers, doctors, etc.

The trainee is taught about the various methods by which they can help assess and resuscitate a cardiac patient, drown victim and other emergencies successfully. The course includes the following topics

1) Audio-Visual (AV) demos: through the AV clips the instructor shows the various techniques by which a health care professional can help in the time of emergencies during the pre-hospital phase. It is an important way to provide training as it helps in understanding the procedures and techniques in a better and more professional way.

2) Techniques for CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation): When cardiac arrest occurs the heart stops pumping blood. CPR helps in \”buying time\” till the heart starts to function normally. Thus CPR is an important technique for a BLS course. It is very important to learn CPR in order to resuscitate a cardiac patient before he can be attended by professional cardiologists.

3) Use of an automated defibrillator: During a cardiac arrest the rhythm of the heart is abnormal. The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) helps in diagnosing this abnormal rhythm and helps in treating them by the use of electrical therapy, which helps to re-establish the normal rhythm of heart beat.

4) Techniques of using AMBU bags used for rescue breathing: The AMBU bag or bag valve mask is a common device in a resuscitation kit. It is a hand-held device used to provide ventilation for a patient who is unable to breathe or who is breathing in an inadequate manner. It is important to understand the use of this in a BLS course as it is useful when the patient is being transferred to a hospital for further treatment. It is also used during an operation in order to provide ventilation for a patient before he/she is transferred onto a mechanical ventilator.

5) Familiarizing the use of Manikins: Manikins are life sized anatomical structures of the human body used for education purposes. The most commonly used manikin is the Transparent Anatomical Manikin (TAM). It is a three dimensional, transparent structure of the human body. The BLS course familiarizes the trainees with the essential anatomical structure through which they can diagnose certain emergencies quickly and provide the basic pre-hospital treatment.

These are the basic courses taught in a Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification course. At the end of the course the trainees are assessed by skill stations and multiple choice questions (MCQ\’s) in order to gauge their learning experience and skills. Once they complete the multiple choice questions and other tests successfully they are provided with the BLS certificate which ensures a successful career as a health care professional.
