12 Tips For Cleaning a Natural Fiber Area Rug
Natural fiber area rugs such as bamboo, jute, sisal, sea grass and hemp are beautiful and can really add a lot to the look of a room. They can also be a bit problematic when it comes to keeping them clean and looking their best.
It is always important to vacuum your natural fiber rug at least once a week, and more if they are in high traffic areas. Dirt particles can filter down and wear out the rug from the underside. When you vacuum, you need to run the vacuum over the rug in several different directions to get all the dirt out. Just going back and forth will not actually do the trick.
Do’s and don’ts
– You should do your best to never get your natural fiber area rug wet.
– Never, ever, use a steam cleaner or a wet shampoo as this will damage the rug and cause it to shrink.
– If a liquid spill occurs, blot the spill with a clean, white towel to absorb it. Don’t use a color towel as the dye from the towel may transfer to the spill and cause a permanent stain.
– Wet spots on a natural fiber rug can mix with any dirt or dust that is in the rug, pulling the dirt to the surface of the rug and cause an unsightly stain.
– You really should not put a natural fiber area rug in any spot where it might get wet, such as in a bathroom or kitchen area.
– Never rub a spill. Instead, blot the area. Rubbing will drive the spill deeper into the rug.
Cleaning a spill
For stains such as coffee, soda, eggs, chocolate, beer, juice and things such as this:
– Immediately blot up as much of the spill as possible using a white towel or paper towels with no dyes in them.
– Sponge the area with as small amount of a carpet shampoo as possible. Blot the area again, and then repeat the shampoo if necessary. Just keep sponging and blotting.
– Dry the area completely using a blow hair dryer.
For oily stains such as make-up, paint, or shoe polish:
– Scrape up as much of the material as you can. Use a butter knife or a nail file.
– Put a small amount of a dry cleaning fluid onto a white towel and blot the stain. Work from the edge of the stain toward the center to avoid spreading the stain.
– Dry the area completely using a blow hair dryer.
Water-based spills can be covered with potato flour and left overnight. The flour will soak up the spill and then you can vacuum up the flour in the morning.
– Spot remover for some stains.
– You can also use an aerosol spot remover for some stains.
Be sure to check the manufacture’s suggestions for cleaning your rug, and the label on the spot remover before you use anything on your natural fiber rug. If you take care of your rug, it will last for years and continue to look great. For more information please visit our area rugs and area rugs in Denver websites.
