My first tip has to do with picking a starting point. The most popular is Las Vegas, NV, followed by Tusayan, AZ, at the South Rim. Other departure points include Phoenix, Flagstaff and Sedona, but expect to pay more if you leave from those locations.

(If you are in Sedona, I advise driving up to the South Rim. It\’s about a 2-hour drive. If you are in Phoenix, it\’s about a 3.5-hour drive).

Use the Internet

Next, I advise purchasing your tickets on the Internet. It\’s safe, secure and convenient. But the most important part is that booking on the Web is cheap. In many cases I\’ve seen prices up to 35 percent cheaper compared to retail or if you were to buy at the destination.

Another tip is to book an airplane tour if the helicopter version you want is sold out. This is quite often the case if you try to purchase a heli flight within four or five days of your desired departure date and time. The reason is because helicopters hold just 6 people whereas planes can carry 19 and thus there\’s more availability.

Once you have a flight in mind, try to take it in the morning. I urge this because mornings from 8 a. M. To 12 p. M. Are the most spectacular. This is because visibility is best at this time. The other time you should consider is sunset, which is limited because departures are once per day.

Deluxe Flights

My final tip is take the deluxe tour. Usually, you get to choose between basic and deluxe. The former is less expensive while the later, in my opinion, is the better value. I feel this way because when it comes to helicopters, the deluxe tours include a host of perks like limousine shuttles and Vegas Strip tours.

The other thing that sets deluxe tours apart is the EcoStar 130 helicopter. This is a superior aircraft that boasts a 180-degree wraparound windshield and stadium-style seating. If you\’re looking to get great pictures while being aloft, the EcoStar is the way to go.

One last point on deluxe trips. Try to get one that includes a side trip. For example, Vegas helicopters and airplanes both land at the top of the Canyon and can be combined with VIP Skywalk tickets (that\’s the glass bridge that lets you walk 70 feet over the edge!). At South Rim, there\’s a terrific helicopter ride that comes with a 3.5 hour Jeep tour.
