Being Prepared – First Aid Kits
A first aid kit should be an essential item for any home or business and maintaining it correctly can be the different between life and death. Incidents often arise when you least expect them and being able to respond quickly is critical.
Workplaces are legally required to have first aid kits and equipment. They must also provide training so that select employees can perform basic first aid. This approach usually means that you are covered while at work but what happens when you are out on the road or at home? Are you and your family covered while out on a day trip?
Many families stock only the very basic first aid items such as plasters and don’t have a fully stocked first aid kit in the home. This means that they might not be able to respond an incident as effectively as possible. First aid professionals recommend regular checks of your first aid supplies and keeping them well maintained. An all in one first aid kit is often the best solution.
The problem that many home owners face is not knowing what should be included in a first aid kit. A good first aid kit will contain plasters, bandages, wound dressing, burn creams, cold compresses, safety pins, adhesive tape, tweezers and scissors and emergency leaflets. Some would argue that tablets and medicines should be included however they should be kept separate. You don’t want to contaminate the two.
There are many retailers who sell kits who include such items. The important thing from an individual’s point of view is to make sure all the items are up to date and to make sure you have enough of them. It’s also a good idea to make sure that everyone in your home knows where the first aid kit is located.
Throughout the year we will spend a large proportion of our time travelling. This maybe because we are going to work or we are away for holiday or day trip. People often get caught out on these occasions because they forget to prepare for possible accidents. Professionals recommend having a first aid for the car and also travel first aid kits for any holidays.
Travel first aid kits often differ from regular first aid kits because the supplies will reflect the different climates. If you are going to a warm country with lots of insects then you will need a kit with plenty of bite creams and repellent. At home in the UK you would often not need such items. First aid kits for the car are often much smaller than regular kits. They usually contain the bare essentials and can be kept neatly in the boot compartment of your car.
Success in any of these areas comes down to preparation. If you are taking a trip make sure that you take a first aid kit with you. Check that it contains the right items. If you own two cars make sure you have a first aid kit for each. These simple things can make a real difference in an emergency situation and protect the people around you.
