Glam up Your Looks With Hats

By | August 26, 2011 | Womens Interest

The history of hats goes a long way. It was hard to say when exactly the first man pulled over an animal skin over his head as protection against the elements. Hats were used for protection against the elements; protection against weapons and injury; as symbol of authority and social status; as headgear for sports and other related activities and as a fashion statement. The wearing of hats has evolved over the last two thousand years.

There was a time that every one, except for the poor, were expected to wear hats. It was unthinkable then for a distinguished person to go out of his or her home without wearing a hat. Back then, milliners had a good business going. Times have changed and the use of hats is no longer mandatory as a social obligation. Though the use of hats is still evident for military personnel and in other job and sport related situations (i.e. construction worker’s hard hat, football player or skydiver), it is no longer protocol for the common people to wear hats.

Wearing of hats nowadays is all about being fashionable. Women and men are both drawn into wearing hats to make a fashion statement and maybe look glamorous. The term glamorous is not all about 50’s Hollywood-kind-of glam but more on the simple, casual and comfortable kind of glam.

Hats can either make or break your looks. A fashionable hat can definitely change your image in an instant. If your hat complements the shape of your face and body and goes with your outfit, you could look all glam-up. There would be no need to put on tons of makeup and other accessories as a fitting hat is accessory enough. The trick in choosing a hat is that you should choose one that you feel comfortable wearing. Donning one wherein you’d be fidgeting will certainly defeat the idea of being glam.

How Do you Choose the Right Hat?

Choose a hat that would make you feel comfortable. You should “wear” the hat and not the other way around. You’ll know that a hat is for you if you feel comfortable wearing it. If you keep on fixing it this way and that then there’s no sense wearing the hat as you don’t feel at ease. To look glam you should feel comfy, cozy and confident.

Choose a hat that is classic. Settle for classic plains like black, camel, brown, cream and grey. These colours should go with most of your attire. Sunhats in yellow straw are great too. Avoid buying hats with too much frills as they are distracting and will definitely not hold for the next fashion season.

Choose a hat that fits the shape of your face and contour of your body. Rounded faces should settle for hats that have a slightly tall crown whilst those with long faces should opt for wider brim hats with flat crowns. If you have a small face, then you should opt for a hat with more volume. The opposite is true for wider or fuller faces. Look at yourself full view when trying on hat. See to it that the hat is not too big or too small for your body built.
