Proper Maintenance of Yachts

Owning your own yacht proves that you have definitely reached the prime of your career. Only the rich can buy a yacht. With sky-high prices, owning a yacht entails even more money to maintain its handsome looks and keep it in good running condition. To ensure that your yacht is in good hands, hire licenced crews to run, manage and take care of the yacht.

Steps in Maintaining a Yacht by Area

Hull. The part that keeps the boat from floating and must be maintained well to ensure good sailing experience is the hull. Depending on the material, care and maintenance of the hull will differ. Check if all the holes of the hull are sealed. This should be done at least once a year. Clean the hull every season. Don’t forget to keep the repair kit handy. This would include duct tape, paint, gel finish. If there are bolts, make sure they are not too rusty as they can loosen the hardness.

Deck and Rigging. This is where you will spend most of your time in. This is where the wind generates the force to keep the yacht sailing. If the deck is made of wood like teak, expect it to be high maintenance even if it’s a traditional material in boat building and it exudes elegance too. If wood-made deck is exposed to extreme temperatures, they can rot quickly. This is why protective coating like varnish should be applied frequently. Common rule is to coat the deck with ten layers of varnish. For the rigging, the fittings and hardware must be constantly checked, making sure screws are tight. Always check for corrosion and rust. Opt to use ropes and lines for rigging for smoother sailing. Wash ropes from time to time to maximise its life. Seal the end of ropes by tying a knot or flaming it. Wash sails and canvas to remove salt and dirt. Sails are always in direct contact with harmful UV rays so always check for damaged parts.

Yacht Interiors. Depending on the budget and to your liking, the interiors will differ from every boat. The interiors will entirely depend on how you want to feel whenever you ride your yacht. You can choose between luxurious comfort or low-maintenance, relatively cheaper trailer-like feel. Moisture is a yacht’s top enemy. It causes wood to rot, metal to corrode, and water to breed fungi. Ensure enough and proper ventilation. Usually, wood is used to create a look of elegance. However, wood can be a tad hard to maintain. Make sure coating is re-applied yearly to maintain shine. Keep the surface dry all the time. Soft materials like carpets and cushions absorb moisture than any other part of the yacht. It’s better to use a material that repels water or moisture.

Create a checklist of things you should look after to refrain from forgetting some of these. Log all the check-ups made so you can refer to it once needed. You may also hire a professional group to check the yacht.
