Why Should Women Lift More Weights?

We all have seen men with hopes of building lovely biceps and triceps, lifting those heavy weights in the gym or even at home. However, have you ever wondered that lifting weights is something that even women can do and gain number of benefits, without having to worry about becoming muscle bound?

If you are a woman, and are afraid that lifting weights will make you muscular, then shed your fear and begin lifting weights right now. Lifting weights, better known as strength training can work wonders for you, and not just the men.

Lifting weights helps in losing fat without depleting the muscles. Retaining the muscle is very important. A single pound of muscle burns two to four times the amount of calories as compared to a single pound of fat.

Strength training, like cardio, raises your resting metabolic rate, which increases the metabolism occurring in your body. When your metabolism increases, you end up burning more calories.

Strength training burns fat while retaining the muscles. Muscles take up much lesser portion of your body as compared to fat. Thus, you appear leaner and slimmer if you regularly engage in strength training. You lose your fat and gain the muscle through strength training.

Women are always at a greater risk of arthritis and osteoporosis. With regular strength training you do not have to worry about such risks because strength training strengthens your skeletal system (bones and joints). Thus, the risk of suffering from these diseases is lower provided you take enough calcium in your diet.

Strength training smoothens out those wrinkles and saggy skin thereby reducing the effects of aging from your body. Thus, strength training is a fantastic anti-aging routine.

Men develop those big muscles because they have a hormone called testosterone in them. However, women don’t have that hormone. Hence, there is no way you will go huge like a man. Instead, strength training burns your fat. Thus, your fear is totally unfounded and baseless.

Once you start lifting weights you will realize that lifting armloads of groceries or even your child becomes much easier. Strength training will increase your maximum strength and thus you will not feel tired after doing your daily chores. Even moderate strength training increases a woman’s maximum strength by 30 to 50%!

Regular strength training not only strengthens your bones, but also strengthens your connective tissue and increases the stability of your joints. This in turn prevents incurrence of injury on your joints.

Regular strength training can also alleviate or even totally eliminate lower back pain, by strengthening the spine. It will also reduce the risk of diabetes as well as heart disease. And, if you suffer from low self esteem or depression, regular strength training can also bring you out of your depression. Studies have shown the reduction of clinical depression symptoms on regular strength training.

Remember that you can start lifting weights and gaining benefits at any age. However, always consult your personal trainer prior to getting into any particular routine.
