Reading Is A Good Habbit

One of the very best things that you can teach your child is that reading can be fun. There are a number of ways that you can make that statement true, too. One way to make story time fun time is by acting out parts of what you are teaching your child to read. There are so many advantages to teaching the child to read at an early age. Above all, though, is that entering school with the ability to read will give a child a distinctive advantage when it comes to learning new things. So, all you need to know is just how to you get them interested in learning to read?

Don’t preach about how everyone needs to learn to read. Preaching and harping on a subject does not encourage anyone to do anything. Kids don’t get this way of thinking. If you put them in a chair and tell them they have to read, they are not going to do it. They will look at it as a punishment, or at the very least, something they are being ‘made’ to do. You have to find another, more exciting way to instill a love of reading.

Begin by reading aloud to your child. Make sure you use a book that has a kid friendly theme. Books that are funny will keep your child interested and wanting to hear more of the story, and this is what is important right now. Go to the library and let them pick out their own books from the children’s section. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as they show an interest.

There are also activity books available that have a story or two with a game or a quiz at the end that relates back to what the child has read. Kids love games and puzzles. Let them try to work it out on their own, with minimal help from you. By pretending that you don’t know the answer, your child will feel as though he is helping you, and this alone is enough to keep him interested and engaged in the learning process.

Reverse the story time routine, and have your child read aloud to you. Ask him to explain a word from the story that you don’t “understand.’ Have him tell you how to pronounce it. At the end of the story, ask him to explain what the story was about. This will help to improve memory and the ability to retain what he has just read.

Every child has something he or she is particularly interested in. With boys, it might be cars, trains or airplanes. Girls usually like fairy tales, or stories about other little girls. As long as they show an interest in something, your job is to hold that interest, and teach them to want to read. The steps above are designed to help you cultivate the reading capabilities of your child, not as a chore, but as something fun that you can do together.
