How to Choose the Right Window Blinds For Your Home
Functions of Window Shades
The purpose of windows shades or window blinds have greatly evolved since the early decades it was first used. From being a mere window covering, they are now also used as important design tools for interior designs. Not only do they enhance the design of a room, they also serve other important purposes because they help lend privacy and are also good energy-saving fixtures. Due to the evolution of purposes of these window fixtures, more and more types of blinds are being manufactured in the market at present.
Types of Window Shades
1. Venetian blinds. This is a type of window shades that is composed of horizontal slats that are placed one above the other. They are mostly made of plastic or metal and are held together by cords or pieces of cloth that are referred as tapes. Venetian blinds are best used in rooms where light must be constantly controlled. By simply adjusting the tapes, the angles of the slats can be adjusted that can control the entry of light inside the room.
2. Vinyl or faux blinds. Another type of mini blinds that is made of PVC. The slats of this type of shade are often embossed and smooth so they are very easy to clean. Faux blinds are also resistant to UV rays and very durable.
3. Composite blinds. This type of window shades is made with a combination of polymers and wood materials. They are very economical and durable just like vinyl blinds. The only problem is that sometimes, composite blinds have this plastic or ‘artificial look’ due to the overly smooth poly coating elements that was applied on the surface slats.
4. Wood blinds. These wood blinds are also called Venetian blinds except that they are made out of 100% wooden materials. They come in different finishes and are classified under premier and budget types. The affordable wood blinds are usually made out of Oriental hardwood while the premium ones mostly use American hardwood or Basswood.
How to Choose the Right Window Shades
The type of window shades should be dependent on the room that they will be installed on. Since there are window blinds whose materials are not fit to certain room temperature, you need to be wise in choosing the right type to use. The following are a couple of guidelines that can help:
– Kitchen. Windows near the sink should be installed with blinds that are easy to clean. Blinds on the kitchen area means that the fixtures will be constantly exposed to water so choosing a waterproof one like faux or vinyl blinds is a good choice.
– Master bath. Just like in the kitchen area, the blinds placed on the master bath will be constantly exposed to water and a humid temperature. Choosing vinyl blinds are good not only because they are water-resistant but because moulds do not easily grow on them even if they are constantly exposed to low and humid temperatures.
– Master Room/Media Room. Since this location is not constantly subjected to extreme temperatures, almost all types of window shades can be used on them. Wood and venetian blinds, however, are good choices because we can easily control and manipulate the entry of light in the room.
