How We Are Kept Safe by Specialist Companies

There are many services available to industry that most of us have never heard of. Companies which take off linings in big storage tanks and then recoat them with specialist materials may be one good example. But to do this task, they need expert knowledge so that damage is kept to a minimum. For those who are in need of this kind of service, try searching for ‘Texas Insulation’ or ‘Texas sandblasting’ to see what they can do and the type of cost that is involved.

Those huge tanks which are often seen around the industrial areas of cities worldwide are often holding highly volatile substances which can be dangerous. Indeed, this is why the tanks sink into the ground when they are full. This would mitigate the damage should it accidentally explode.

The contents will also be highly corrosive to the metal that it comes into contact with too so the whole tank is lined with something to stop it getting through. It is obvious then that very occasionally, this lining has to be taken off and replaced to give the tank and extended life.

How these experts do this is to send in teams of workers to literally blast the surface areas with sand or metal pellets shot through a machine under high pressure. We all know what sand can do when it is blasted under pressure, so imagine what metal pellets can do. The materials that line these tanks are literally chipped off by this pressurized blasting and it leaves the metal ‘naked’ so that it can be coated with another material which resists corrosion.

This is highly skilled work, and highly dangerous too, since the workers will be in a confined space doing what they have to. If they spot any defects or holes in the tank, they will often have to replace the metal too before putting on the coating. This is done by machines which melt thin wires into liquid form and sprayed across the hole. Several layers will be put on to cover the hole to make it leak proof before the last coating of specialist material is added to stop more corrosion.

This kind of treatment is also used on girders on bridges too since the weather is always corroding metal. Rust will literally eat its way through metal at any given moment and this will certainly make any structure weaker. Add weight of cars and people and the results will be obvious.

There are some bridges around the world which are undergoing this kind of treatment permanently. The Forth Bridge in Scotland, for example, has a team of workers on it permanently. When they have finished going from one end to the other, they immediately go to the other end and start all over again. It spawned the saying, ‘like painting the Forth Bridge’ meaning that this is a never-ending job.

Experts in the field are highly qualified for this kind of work and it cannot be undertaken by anyone else. It is thanks to them that we all have the supplies we need, like gas, near at hand but in relative safety.
