Kicking Out Termites the High Tech Way
Whenever we see evidence of our homes being nibbled at, it is usually termites which are the culprits. There some ants who also like to house themselves inside wood too, but these do very little damage. Indeed, they will eat these destructive creatures so if the ants are seen, it may be a good idea to let them stay! Termite treatments vary, but the usual ways can involve some rather disruptive times ahead for families or office buildings alike.
First, the creature is just looking for food and this comes in the form of cellulose in wood. It does not matter if this is new wood or lovely antique wood as long as it has cellulose. It is this that makes people fear their presence in the home since their much loved furniture could just be lunch for the creatures!
Some clever exterminators have started to study the behavior of the creatures and use this against them in the never ending battle to hold them at bay. For example, the queen is the only one which will lay eggs. Her minions will look after the eggs in the nest while others will go out to forage for food, the cellulose in wood, to bring back to the nest for all of them to eat. To do this, they build long tunnels deep in the ground and can end up a football field length away from the colony. In our terms, that could well be several miles for sure. The tunnels serve two purposes. One is that they are hiding from natural predators, and two, their bodies are very tender and must not dry out.
Once they have found the food source, they lay down scent marks so that the other foragers can follow on behind without working too hard. If they happen to come across an immovable object on the way, and this could be metal or walls, they merely build above ground tunnels from the dirt. Eventually, they will infest just about anywhere in the home and this can really weaken structures too much. One can only imagine what would happen if they got to the beams in the roof! The most high-tech way of holding them back is by sinking long tubes into the ground around a building. Into these goes poisoned bait which the creatures find irresistible. Eventually, this will be taken back to the queen where she will succumb to the poison. When she dies off, so will the rest of the creatures living there.
The wonderful thing about this method though is that the garden is not disrupted at all, nor is the sidewalks where buildings are in towns. This is great for historical places or where gardens should not be tampered with. The tubes can stay in place indefinitely and the operatives monitor them for the foreseeable future. Although this may be more expensive than digging trenches, as is the older method of extermination, it does get more economical over time and no one needs to know what is going on either.
