Become Mr. Or Mrs. Fix It
When you own a home, little fixes here and there can get expensive when you constantly hire someone to do the work for you. When you rent, things that become broken by normal wear and tear are usually taken care of by the landlord, but when you own a home you have to worry about things like electric and plumbing and other items that require maintenance. If you constantly feel like you are hiring people to do work on your house, maybe it is time that you learn how to do a few things on your own. Sure, hiring a plumbing contractor to fix the leak in your sink is much easier than figuring it out on your own, but it costs a lot less to figure out how to do it on your own.
If you have a job and you do not have a lot of time to do work around the house, it is understandable that you would want to hire someone to take care of these issues for you. If you have the money and you do not have the time then it only makes sense to get someone else to take care of the problem professionally. However, if you are a stay at home parent, you might as well get creative with your extra time while the kids are at school and learn how to do some new things. Not only will you feel great about fixing something on your own, but you will save money and know how to fix it the next time something goes wrong. When you learn how to do something new, write down the supplies you need to fix it and how you fixed it. You can make your own fix it reference book for yourself.
Just like it seems silly to have someone change a headlight in your car, it also seems silly to hire someone to unclog a drain or change a light bulb in your own home. No everyone likes to take matters into their own hands and fix things, but it is nice when you do and some people really find that fun.
There are a few ways to fix simple things. First of all, fixing clogged drains is very simple. If you do enough research you will discover that you should buy a stick with jagged edges. You stick it down the drain and it unclogs it right away. You can also use a liquid drain unclog chemical.
There are also other very quick fixes. If you have any leaks in pipes or faucets, you will have to look to make sure they are fastened properly and if this is not the problem than you may have to seal the leaks with something that you buy at the store. Some fixes are better to get done professionally but simple ones are better and cheaper to do on your own. All it takes is a little research in books or on the internet to figure out the supplies you will need and what you need to do.
