Using CCTV To Catch A Criminal
In today’s day and age, CCTV is being relied on more than ever by the police to help catch criminals, as it provides rock solid evidence when presented in a court of law to place a person in a location or to even show them committing the crime. In fact, other than DNA evidence, CCTV is the most effective tool that the police have. This puts a lot of pressure on the industry – as well as those with CCTV systems – to ensure that their equipment is up to the job, with high quality images and other aspects playing a pivotal role. So what should you do to your home CCTV system to ensure that the police can use it effectively in the event of a crime?
The most important thing to remember when it comes to CCTV is that the image is everything. This means that whatever is caught on camera should be clear and usable. Remember – just because it appears clearly on your CCTV monitor, it doesn’t mean that it is being recorded in that way on your CCTV DVR, so regularly check the quality of the footage that you record. The best way to ensure that the footage is of good quality is to increase the frame rate that the cameras are recorded on, which can usually be accomplished by accessing the menu on the CCTV DVR. The highest frame rate is 25 frames per second, but anything around 10 will usually suffice. If it is too low though, you will have footage that is jerky and often misses key points in the action.
Just as important as what is on the camera, is what is not on the camera! The police are always frustrated to find that a crime is committed just to the side of the camera’s view and the reality is this is usually down to the CCTV owner not positioning in the cameras properly. Take time to evaluate where you want you cameras to point and if you want to ensure that a criminal can’t hide, use a dome camera so that they don’t know where the camera is looking! For example, if you have a camera on a pole in your front yard, make it a dome camera – this way, the criminal will effectively have nowhere to hide.
It is also important to maintain the cleanliness of your CCTV system, as a unfortunately placed piece of dirt on a lens can ruin a piece of CCTV, covering the face of the perpetrator and meaning that they can’t be identified. Regular wiping of the camera’s lens will prevent this and it is a job that takes only a minute per camera and that could save a lot of money in the future. After all, if you are going to spend hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars on a CCTV system, you don’t want it to be made redundant by one pesky piece of dirt!
