Who is in the Power Business?
Which types of utilities are in the power business? The answer is simple when we consider that we derive energy from both natural gas and from electricity. One feeds the other in production because it is well known that in some cases, natural gas is used as fuel to heat the turbines that in turn produces electric energy. But the utilities themselves aren’t the only ones involved in the production of the energy that fuels our world.
The power business is one in the same with the energy sector. Energy is needed for its production. We rely on energy for just about everything in our daily lives. Whether it is the refrigerator that keeps out food fresh, or the car that we drive to work, energy is essential to keep our lives in working order. The community relies on the power business to provide traffic lights and street lights to keep us safe and keep the traffic flowing steadily. The factories rely on it to provide electricity to run the machinery and equipment that make their products, and the computers that track the inventory and invoice their services. Schools rely on electricity to provide lighting and even the bells that ring between classes. Without electricity and natural gas, our world would come to a screeching halt.
The power business encompasses more than just the utilities themselves. There are many people who work hard to make sure that we have the energy that we need. There are those that drive the trucks who deliver the various fuels that are needed. There are people that mine for coal and dig for natural gas. There are people who put together and maintain the pipelines. There are technicians that run the facilities and monitor the equipment. There are repair people who take care of outages and maintain the equipment that is necessary to provide consumers with the energy needed.
Imagine what the world would be like if there was no electricity flowing to all of the things that we use on a daily basis and often take for granted, such as the television and the computer. No one gives a second thought to the fact that when they flip the switch the lights come on, or we turn on the shower and what comes out is wonderful hot water. All of these things are provided to us by those resources that are provided by the energy sector. The power business entails plenty of hard work to make sure that we have the utilities that we need.
The future could hold more in store for one type of energy in particular, and that is natural gas. This natural resource is found everywhere in this country, and it is a clean burning fuel that remains at a competitive price. It is quite possible that in the coming years it may even replace oil as the energy of choice in this country. That would be wonderful as it is already used in electricity production. This would be a step in the right direction toward straightening out a troubled economy, stopping the dependency on foreign oil, as well as going a long way in helping reduce the carbon footprint that we leave as a nation.
