Along with these styles of clothing, a kind of culture is expected, or at least was expected when the style first came about, although today, it has turned into more of a style rather than way of life. The first people who promoted urban wear would usually be into graffiti. This would be either painted or sprayed on walls, trains, windows, and any plain surface.

Although this defacing of public property is illegal, it has remained a popular pastime for many urban youth. The right accessories are also essential to pulling of the urban look. Things like caps, hats, chains and large studded pendants are often associated with looking the part. These days urban wear is often tighter than it was in the past, but its roots remain the same.
