How to Find a Lost Contact Lens on the Carpet
For some people a common factor of wearing contact lenses regularly is losing contact lenses. Although contacts are designed to stay in position over your cornea, some people just can’t seem to keep them on there for any length of time. Whether you forget that a contact lens is in there and rub your eyes a little too enthusiastically, or they just don’t seem to like staying in place on your eyes, losing contacts can be a problem. Not only will losing them affect your vision, but they also cost money and losing them isn’t cost effective. Sometimes, when a contact lens falls out of your eye on the street or other public place, it’s gone and you have to find a replacement. If you happen to be indoors and lose a contact on carpet, it is possible to retrieve and use it again, but you may have to get creative.
First thing, if you actually want to use the contact lens again it may be wise not to start walking all around the area right after it falls to the carpet. Once you realize that it has hit the floor, try to freeze in your tracks for a few moments. Look down to the carpet without moving your feet. If you can’t see the contact lens on the carpet within a minute or two, carefully step away. Take one big step in the opposite direction of where you think the contact fell, just to ensure you don’t step on it and cause it to tear or scratch beyond repair.
Next, get your vacuum cleaner and try to find a piece of nylon stocking. You may have to cut a perfectly good pair of pantyhose for your project, but the health of your contact lenses is important. Remove any large attachments, and then position the section of stocking over the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner. Make sure it covers the entire opening, and use either a rubber band or section of tape to hold it in place. Lightly vacuum the area of carpet where you feel you lost the contact lens, holding the nozzle just off the surface of the carpet.
Once you find the right spot, the contact will be sucked into the stocking and held in place for you to retrieve. As long as it isn’t scratched up or badly damaged, you should be able to rinse it well with your contact lens solution and pop it back into your eye. If you don’t have a vacuum cleaner or stocking available, using a strong magnifying glass may also help. Finding contact lenses in a carpet that has longer fibers may prove fruitless with a magnifying glass, but if it is your only option it may be worth a shot.
Your contact lenses are important for the health of your eyes, so taking the extra time to find it is worth the effort. If you find yourself losing contacts regularly due to an improper fit, consult your optometrist or optician and ensure that your next batch of contact lenses is the right shape and size for your eye.
