Off the north coast of Sicily in Italy you will find the island of Lipari. This island is the largest of the Aeolian Islands which are located in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The main town of this island is also known as Lipari. The Aeolian Islands of which Lipari is a part of form a volcanic archipelago which spans the gap between Mount Etna and Vesuvius. You will discover that most of the island’s population lives in the five main villages which can be found on Lipari.

These are the villages of Acquacalda located along the northern coast and Pianoconte is due east of the town of Lipari. The village of Canneto can be found on the eastern shore north of the Lipari town. And finally you have the village of Quattropani in the northwest of the island. In the Neolithic times the island was along with Sardinia one of the few main places where the trade of obsidian – which was a hard, black volcanic glass – could be done without any problems. This was mainly due to the island being created by volcanic action. Today while you may not seen obsidian trade being conducted on the island you will be able to see other interesting sights.

Of these many sights you may enjoy visiting the Museo Archeologico Regionale Eoliano. Here you will be able to see various artefacts which have been recovered from the numerous archaeological sites in the Aeolian Islands and ones from various shipwrecks. You will also enjoy walking around the island’s towns. As you walk around Lipari you will notice that there are various types of walking pathways. Some of these will be easy for people of all ages, there are also ones which can be considered as intermediately difficult walking paths and then you have the pathways where you will need to take some care when following these paths. While you can buy a map which will show you all of the routes around Lipari you will be better served if you ask one of the local inhabitants for some help and advice.

Besides trekking around the island you will find there is another fun activity that you can do while you are in Lipari. This activity is best done during the summer months at Faraglioni. Here you will find that the water is crisp and quite clear. This makes swimming, diving and snorkelling here an unforgettable experience that you will not soon forget. A note of caution while you are in the waters of Faraglioni. As the currents here are strong and unpredictable it is best if you take some care during your water activities.

To round off the sights, activities that you can do while you are in Lipari you should experience some of this island’s wonderful cuisine. There are a number of excellent restaurants on the island where you will be able to savour the taste of Calamari, Pescespada which is Swordfish, and other Eolian plates.
