A Checklist Prior to Hiring
Publicly Traded Companies and Colleges – A Mixture Which Should Be Illegal
Students Should Get Into A University Based On Their Merits / Ambitions
I don’t know if I can actually say the name of the school which I am referring to as I don’t feel like getting sued, but I’m sure you can figure it out: the college is now allowed to call itself a “University,” it is a heavily publicly traded stock and you are, essentially allowed to buy a degree. From what I have seen and what I will explain in a bit, I firmly believe that they (executive management) do not care about the students. Because I am a recruiter, I have a contact in the career department. She is great; she is friendly, she is smart and she wants to make a difference and make enrollment harder to obtain. Though, that could never happen.
To reiterate, there is a reason why she could try and try again, but never make a difference. If they don’t enroll more students every fiscal quarter, that is compared to the last quarter, people are going to sell the stock as if it were some kind of computer virus in their portfolio. Despite the publicly traded aspect, in any class you have students who are really ambitious, treat the curriculum seriously and truly have a passion for learning, but they have a disadvantage. They are put in an atmosphere with students who could care less, are going to do the basics, do not want to improve themselves and are okay with a minimal job. Now, I would agree that this is the case in every college; you always have your slackers. However, prior to putting the slackers in that classroom, these colleges have means as to testing the student to see if he or she has academic aptitude combined with some intelligence. This is a lot better than the first scenario I laid forth.
Another thing which concerns me is that the company, sorry I mean university, also has an.edu domain. Not many people know this, but before receiving that type of domain, a non for profit organization has to go through the website and approve it. Well, it must have been margarita night the previous day. Not only did they go through the academics, they learned all about the college and decided it was in the same league as (names randomly picked to make a point) Columbia, University of Georgia, UCLA – well, you get the point. It’s just a matter of time until they have a football team which is allowed to compete with “real” colleges.
The worst part of it was that I interviewed two students from the university and, I was truly hoping that they would surprise me. Their interviewing skills were at a college freshman level and, when I asked one if she would be kind enough to send me a sample writing, she promptly sent it, but her punctuation was at a high-school level.
I just wonder how the CEO of that company can cash his checks and stock options with a smile on his face. All and all, this is quite disconcerting and should be made illegal.
