How to Create an Outdoor Living Space For Little or No Cost?

There really should be no excuses for not spending plenty of time out of doors once the warm weather appears. However, it should be expected that people will often declare that they avoid using their own garden space because it is uninviting, or ill equipped for entertaining. This is then supported by the claim that it would cost a bundle to make it bearable, much less enticing. Therefore, there is little that they can do, and will have to make use of indoor space instead, or hope to be invited to the home of someone who has their act together.

The reality of it is that most people could do a great deal to improve their outdoor area at little, or no expense. The trick is to creatively work with what you already own, and start with small projects that you actually complete. Then you can intermingle pieces that you get from sales, discount stores, or from neighbours that are moving or cleaning out their garage. The end result will be a special space that comes with bragging rights due to your resourcefulness. Imagine that, more time spent outside and a beaming glow from your savvy success.

First thing you will need is table space, but nowhere is it written that you have to buy something new, or that you even have to use an actual table. An old coffee table from the attic, the curb in front of your neighbours home, or a nearby garage sale can make things more intimate. Throw some weather resistant fabric over it and nobody will ever even have to see what lies below. Or paint the whole thing with some bright weather resistant paint and you have yourself an eye-catching feature.

Another way to create an outdoor gathering, or dinning area is to take two beaten up saw horses and place a piece of plywood on top of them, and presto chango you have a table. Cover that ole eyesore with fabric and you have created something even Mother Nature would respect. The same works for a rinky-dink plastic table, the magic of some patterned cloth, or even upholstery fabric should never be underestimated. It will introduce texture, bring in a richness and even tie together the decor you have established within your home.

Now, if your lawn is slightly uneven, you will want to level the earth below your table. Think about whether you have any pavers left over from the installation of your driveway. Or, perhaps they recently extended the walkway at a nearby school, or church and they are eager to give away the remaining pavers away. It never hurts to inquire, because they may be headed for the garbage and you might be doing your part for the environment. Then you can make a lovely pattern out of them, and you have not only evened things out, but you have defined your space too. Should your pavers not flow with the style of your garden, cover them with an outdoor rug that will also bring colour into the space.

Gather a collection of mismatched chairs and paint them all the same colour, preferably with some leftover exterior paint, for continuity. They will serve you well around the dinning table. If you choose to go with the coffee table approach, place garden benches with pillows and throw blankets around it.

For the final touch, surely you have extra candles lying around. Even if they are cracked, ugly, or show signs of use you can get some life out of them. Grab some fire resistant paper bags, cut some designs out of them and instant ambiance is created. Pick up a few of those small potted plants you have scattered about and place them on your table as a centrepiece. Of course it goes without saying that painting them is always a quick fix if they have seen better days.

All that is left is to enjoy and admire your new favourite place. Just listen to the sound of the birds, sip slowly on a chilled beverage and fill your lungs to capacity with fresh air. That is until one of your guests asks for your help creating a similar spot in their garden. After all imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
