Humane Rodent Removal

Humans share this planet with lots of other species. And the varieties of the species are manifold. From insects to birds and mammals. Many of these animals are useful, some even suitable as pets. Others can be damaging and dangerous for humans. Rodents belong in the later category.

Every human living space, even after many years of industrialization and sanitary improvements, can be overtaken by different kinds of rodents. And this is not only true for farmlands and rural areas. Fields and farms seem to provide the best foundation for spreading a rodent population but the lack of predators, the many hiding places and the sheer endless food supply in urban areas provide an even better environment.

And with the rodents spread also the damage and the danger of diseases; caused by rodent parasites and feces.
One of the most common rodent species is the common house mouse (Mus musculus). House mice can reproduce in an amazing speed. At an age of only 5 weeks, the female mouse is ready to breed. The gestation period is only between 18 to 21 days.

If we consider that a female mouse can give birth to 5 to 10 litters a year with 5 to 10 pups per litter then we can expect 25 to 100 new births per year for every adult female (this will multiply because every newborn female will reproduce after a few weeks too). This makes it necessary a stop an invasion as soon as possible.

Humans have to face this problem since many generations. By now, most of the rodent’s natural enemies are gone. Cats and dogs are domesticated. Foxes, snakes and birds of prey are rare in Towns or Cities.

Today more than ever, humans have to rely on their ingenuity to fight a rodent infestation. One of the first inventions to remove rodents was the spring loaded mouse trap. This trap used the energy stored in a loaded spring to move a bar for trapping and killing the mouse. There are many varieties of this trap. They might look different but work by the same idea. After every catch a dead mouse has to be disposed what can be a messy task. As will be the resetting of the trap.
Another common way to fight a mouse population is the use of poison. This can be a very fast way for getting rid of all rodents in a house or apartment. Some of the methods use poison that can also be dangerous for pets. Others use chemicals to dehydrate the mouse. The mouse will not die right away in either case. The mouse still has time to find a hiding place. This can cause decaying stench in hard to reach places.

The growth in awareness about nature and environment lead to a new different kind of rodent trap. The humane or life mouse or rodent trap. These kinds of traps lure the mouse or rodent, using bait, into a container. There is no way out of the container or the door doesn’t open in the direction of freedom. All mice are caught alive and can be released in a save environment far away from human living space like parks or fields.

The internet is a good place to find information about different types of humane or live rodent traps. There are even instructions on how to build easy but effective traps yourself.
