One of the most used items in the restroom is toilet paper. We use a lot of toilet paper rolls without even thinking how this humble piece is produced or what materials go into its production. However, being aware of environmental issues, we have many things to consider first before we buy toilet paper. This is especially true for those who are in charge of buying janitorial supplies for their office or company because they buy in large quantities and their decision affects hundreds of others within their organization. Toilet paper may seem like an insignificant item among other janitorial supplies like cleaning chemicals, wiper and rags, floor and carpet care products, but buyers will still have to consider costs, size, style and softness when choosing the right toilet paper. For some people, even color matter as well. There has to be a way to save money on toilet paper and still satisfy the preferences of users.

Depending on your priority, your decision to buy toilet paper can be based on cost, type of toilet paper, raw materials and processes that the toilet paper goes through. For those who are after more dollar savings, buying cheap toilet paper is the answer. Cheap toilet paper may be low-grade which is coarser and doesn’t go through any treatment; or mid-grade which is made of treated and bleached paper. However, it may not be the most comfortable toilet paper to use and employees might complain. The purchaser must therefore balance savings and quality. Toilet paper comes in three main styles – standard, which is what we normally use at home; jumbo, which is typically used in public restroom; and jumbo junior, which is smaller than jumbo and usually used with small dispensers when only a small space is available.

Most people know the difference between 1-ply toilet paper and 2-ply toilet paper. Some brands are available in 4-ply versions as well. Two- (or four) ply toilet paper is usually softer and gentler on the skin but more expensive. Each type can be further classified according to purpose such as ultra soft and ultra strong. Some environmentally people go for 1-ply since it uses less paper and less expensive but does almost the same thing as the premium 2-ply or even 4-ply versions with inks, fragrances, wax or lotion. However, if you want an even greener option, you can opt for 100% recycled toilet paper. Many people are still afraid of using such kind of toilet paper because of softness issues. It doesn’t need any further processing as the other types. It may not be as fine and soft as the traditional toilet paper, but it is definitely better for the environment. Recycled toilet paper uses less energy to produce and if free from any harsh contaminants.

You would think toilet paper color wouldn’t matter but it does. You can either get white or brown. White toilet paper goes through a bleaching process to give it a white clean look but cost more. Brown toilet paper doesn’t and comes as naturally colored, contains fewer contaminants. It may be available in off-white color as well. .
