Seasonal Decorating Tips For After the Holidays

Once Christmas is over, most people think that it is time to take down the decorations, and put everything away for next year. Most homes feel sort of empty after all of the decorations have been put away, but you can go ahead and decorate based on the season, not just during the holidays. Here are some tips and tricks for seasonal decorating after the holidays have passed.

Decorate by season. This does not necessarily mean that a home should be decorated based on the next upcoming holiday. Some months have few or no holidays to work with, and no one wants to decorate based on a major holiday that is still months away. Other holidays would be very difficult to find attractive decorations for, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day. Instead of decorating by holiday, use the seasons as a guide.

Decorating by season is simple. Use the color palettes that suit that season as a starting point. For example: During the winter months, whites, pastel blue, snowflakes, snowmen, silver, bright cheerful reds, rich greens, and similar colors can easily be incorporated without stepping into the Santa regime. Unless the decor is strictly Christmas, use winter as the focal point, instead of the holiday. Spring, summer, and fall should be used in the same manner.

Keep it simple. There is no need to completely remodel every room for each season. That would be expensive, and require a lot of effort. Instead, choose decorative items and accents that can easily be swapped out or covered with decoration. With a significantly lower price tag, decorating a home simply but stylishly can be done for each passing season, and the same pieces can often be used for several years without being tacky.

Simple decorations include pillow covers for throw pillows, which can easily be sewn in colors and styles that suit the season, candles (especially scented candles or oils), sconces or wall art, lampshades, place mats, throw rugs, and similar items. Use scents and shades that complement the season, not just a particular holiday. Most of these items do not cost much to purchase, and are very easy to store when not in use.

To add holiday flair, add a few items that are specific to the particular holiday, instead of decorating the whole home. Having a decorative Christmas tree and holiday stockings is sufficient for one room for the Christmas season. Going overboard often looks tacky, and is normally reserved for those with small children. Even homes with children should be aware that some or are too fragile to be with children in the home.

We often invite people of many different cultures to our homes throughout the course of the year. Decorating simply but elegantly, and allowing colors to be our inspiration instead of the holiday itself, will be sure to please a larger crowd, and guarantee that no one is offended by a particular character. Not everyone appreciates a naked Cupid at Valentine’s Day, and not all religions or cultures use Santa Claus, reindeer, whimsical characters, or cartoons as focal points. Even using religious symbolism should be kept to a minimum to avoid the look of a shrine, unless that is the decor being sought.
