The Basics of Trading Online

In this difficult financial climate it is clear that many companies have gone bust. This is especially true of smaller independant shops who have found it difficult to adjust in the recession. It isn’t much of a coincidence that the shops and companies which have gone out of business have been those which have not had an online presence and as such have been unable to adjust to the ever changing economic conditions. It is therefore understandable why people may be hesitant to start up their own business at the moment. This may certainly be the case if you are looking to start up a traditional high street bricks-and-mortar store, however were you to set up a company which traded solely online then things could be somewhat different. For those who are less technically literate than most, the prospect of setting up a website can be quite daunting however this need not be the case.

A simple way to cut your teeth on starting up a website is by setting up a blog. The best thing about doing this is that it’s free so the barriers to entry are very low. They work in very much the same way that most word processing software does so it is as simple and quick to get your ideas online as it is to think of them. You could start by looking at blogging services such as WordPress of Blogger where all it will take is a few minutes to register your details and then you are ready to go. You will then be able to start ‘blogging’ about subjects relating to your products or services, or you may wish to start trying to promote your services straight away. This could be done by writing articles about what you do and the benefits of such a service. You could then contact owners of other websites who may benefit from your skills and include a link to your website in your email. Alternatively they may themselves run a blog in which case you could simply leave a comment on their site.

This is a very crude way of going about setting up a website, however it will get you used to creating and managing content which can often be quite difficult and a little time consuming. If you are looking for a business website that is more sophisticated then you may wish to approach a few local web design agencies. This can be done with a simple search on Google, however there are a number of other ways in which you can draw up a shortlist of suitable suppliers. A good idea may be to find a few local companies who provide a similar service to yours and find out who made their website.

When approaching these design agencies it is important that you set yourself a realistic budget as it is certainly the case that you will be able to get a very good website designed and built relatively cheapley, however you cannot realistically expect an all singing all dancing website for bottom of the barrel prices.
