The Shades of Blue in Menorca’s Son Bou

One of the most beautiful resorts in Menorca, Son Bou is a holiday favourite every year. Whether you want to explore the island and its beautiful landscapes, wander the shops looking for souvenirs, or simply lie back and relax on the beach, there is plenty to do and many shades of blue in Menorca’s Son Bou.

The Ocean

Home to the longest beach in Menorca, Son Bou is a prime destination for spending time by the sea, and particularly when the ocean is such a beautifully bright blue. Clear waters line the beach, fading to a wonderful turquoise colour which stretches as far as the eye can see. The water in Son Bou is known for being both clean and clear, making it perfect for everything from swimming, to spotting fish, to hiring pedaloes. Nothing is more relaxing than the calm, serene blue of the sea in Son Bou, and you will be simply itching to jump straight in.

The Sky

One place where you are guaranteed a good dose of vitamin D is Menorca, Son Bou being no exception to this rule. With up to eleven hours a day of sunshine during the summer months and at least five hours throughout the winter, you are bound to see blue skies above you for at least some of your holiday, if not all of it. Temperatures tend to rise to almost thirty degrees celsius during the heart of summer, dropping not much lower than fifteen degrees in the winter, so there’s nothing stopping you from getting outside into the fresh air and enjoying the sunshine. Whether you are staring up at the sky whilst you lie on your back soaking up the sun, or walking towards it as you climb higher and higher up one of Son Bou’s hills, the blue skies will not only boost your vitamin D, but they will put you in a great mood and really add to that holiday feeling.

The Plants and Animals

Menorca, Son Bou especially, is home to all manner of plants and animals that you might not see in your back garden. Stray a little way off the beaten track to venture into the countryside and you will be rewarded with some of nature’s finest offerings. Standing out particularly clearly among the greenery you will find Psoralea bituminosa – a pretty little plant with blue flowers that are well worth a photograph as you pass by. However, something to really look out for is the blue rock thrush. Unlike their darker brown mates, in summer, male blue rock thrushes are a wonderful blue-grey colour with slightly darker wings, making them a little difficult to spot against clear blue skies. Fortunately though, they tend to stick to slightly hilly areas with plenty of foliage which will make them easier to spot. Small, starling-sized birds, the blue rock thrushes can be difficult to spot, but the fantastic colourings make it well worth a twitching trip.

So the words ‘holiday’ and ‘blue’ do not have to go together only in the context of holiday blues when returning from Menorca. Son Bou is a beautiful location for a holiday, featuring every shade of blue!
