What is the Relationship Between Fitness and Close Combat Training?

Some people decide that they want to learn close combat training, however once they begin practicing, they realize that they are really out of shape. While they can still physically do all of the moves, they also know that they are not in good enough shape to adequately defend themselves, let alone get away. Because of this, some people want to begin a fitness program in order to improve their chances of defending themselves. The idea of staying in shape has become more a focal point in many self defense courses, a trend that some people credit to Captain Chris. But do you really need to get into better shape in order to defend yourself? Here are some ways to find out.

One of the easiest ways to find out if you need to get into better shape is to take a quick run. You don’t need to try an run 5 miles, but just a short sprint or medium fast jog. This will let you know if you need to start a fitness routine. What good does self defense do if you are not in good enough shape to get away once you create an opening? If you are slow or cannot run more than a block, then your attacker will quickly be able to catch up with you. Plus, since you have already used your close combat training once, they will not underestimate you this time. Additionally, there are going to be angry, which will rarely work in your favor. Keep in mind that you don’t need to get in “peak condition”, you just need to be able get away from an attacker and put some distance between you and them.

Another way to try and decide whether or not you need to get into better shape is to think about an “average attacker”. It doesn’t really matter how you picture your attacker, just take your own perception of an average attacker and go from there. What physical advantage do you have over them. Are you bigger, stronger, faster, quicker, have more stamina? If you have absolutely zero physical advantages over the average attacker, then you may want to get into better shape. While Captain Chris states that everyone can learn how to defend themselves, it is going to be a lot easier if you have some type of physical advantage on your side.

It is important to point out that you don’t need to start exercising 7 days a week, although that might not be a bad idea. All you need to do is generally get in better shape. If you haven’t worked out in years, or ever, start by going for a walk every evening. It doesn’t have to be far and it doesn’t have to be fast. Even a casual walk can get you in better shape.

As you can see, there is definitely a strong relationship between close combat training and fitness. While this doesn’t mean that you need to go crazy and exercise 3 hours a day, every day, it does mean that getting in a little better shape might be a good idea. Remember, your close combat training won’t do you any good if once you get away, your attacker can catch up to you in a matter of minutes.
