Drug Effects

“Nice to see you Frank,” I said. “Good morning dottore,” he replied. I enjoyed seeing Frank; I played with his son growing up. My father and Frank were like family growing up. “What brings you here today?” I asked. “I’ve got a problem on the lower right; my tooth hurts down there” he replied. “Let me take a look,” I said. I robotically pushed the button on my dental chair that brings the chair down so that I could have a better look. “No! No! Stop!” Frank exclaimed. I stopped the chair’s movement and positioned it back up. “What’s wrong Frank?” I asked. “I can’t go back, my head gets dizzy; I feel like I may pass out” he replied. Something is seriously wrong I thought to myself. “Tell me more Frank. What’s going on?” I asked. Frank replied, “Well no one knows what’s wrong. I had a CAT scan and an MRI and still the doctors don’t know what’s wrong.”

A philosophy that I practice no matter what the case is: keep it simple. If you keep things simple the answer is usually right in front of your face. When you complicate things you further hide the answer to the problem. With this practice always in mind I said “Frank, what about this blood pressure medication you’re taking? Has anyone considered that it may be causing the side effect of dizziness?” “I’ve been taking these pills for a while now. Why would they bother me now?” he asked. I replied, “I don’t know Frank, but it’s worth a look into.” On the way out Frank thanked me for fixing his tooth problem. I was happy to see him. I reminisced on childhood memories. Frank called me two days later thanking me sincerely for giving him his life back. “I stopped taking the pressure pills and my dizziness disappeared”, Frank said. I was happy for Frank but I was sad because I realize what a complexity medicine has evolved into. It took a dentist to diagnose what Frank’s physicians overlooked. The MRI and CAT scan he received was a waste of money. It was his medication all along causing his dizziness.

How much wasted insurance money gets used up when it’s not needed in the first place? Frank’s blood pressure medication clearly lists dizziness as a possible side effect. Other side effects include headache, depression, chest pain, nausea, abnormal vision and many more. With the amount of drugs being taken today, I wonder how many illnesses are being caused by prescription medication. How many people are taking a medication for one thing then due to a side effect get depression – then get prescribed and antidepressant? Now once on an antidepressant develop more side effects. Possible side effects of antidepressants include; SUICIDE, extreme agitation, hostility, aggression, withdrawal reactions, birth defects; must I go on? Even with these side effects, people take their pills and the side effects are overlooked when new illnesses develop. I’ve had many situations in my practice that prescription drugs have caused serious problems. One really ticked me off. A nice new patient that came to see me for an emergency had a serious infection after a tooth extraction. My diagnosis was bone necrosis. This means his jaw bone was rotting away. This was due to a serious side effect from the medication he was taking. What a mess this was? The patient claimed he never knew and was not told of this possible horrendous side effect. This is a drug lawsuit if I ever saw one. It’s true that most doctors don’t discuss side effects with patients and by default it’s the patient’s responsibility to research their own drugs.

In closing I suggest that you consider the possible side effects of drugs before using them. And if you decide to go on a prescription be wary of the drug’s effects. Always consider any new “illness” you get may be the side effect of the drugs you are taking. There are billions of dollars being made from the drugging of the population. The truth is often suppressed. The drug I’ve seen cause the most side effects is cholesterol medication. Next time I’ll share some stories and how you can lower cholesterol naturally.
