Seven Unusual Ideas For Halloween Costumes
Here are some ideas on how to make your Halloween costumes a bit different this year. Halloween is almost upon us – again. Halloween is great, and there is only one thing wrong with it – once it’s over it’s just 55 days to Christmas! Nevertheless, we all tend to drag out the same old stuff for our fancy dress or costume party, and the kid’s love to go ‘trick or treat’, but what can you give them to wear this year? Or to wear yourself to your Halloween party!
Here are seven ideas that enable you to avoid the usual witches’ cloak, broom and pointy hat, although these will be included in the list because many people prefer to be conventional, and what is more ‘Halloweenish’ than a witch! Each of these ideas for Halloween costumes can be adapted for children or adults.
So, let’s start with No. 1 the witch.
1. A Witch
So what’s unusual about a witch? Well, nothing really, but how about going as a Witch Queen? You can buy this fantastic costume online with a blood red velvet gown with a black netted skirt over it, and a black veil. It also comes with a waistline that is chained and beaded and to top it all – a polyurethane metalized breastplate. Cut yourself a large stick as a staff and wand, and you are transformed into a beautiful witch queen, not the usual old haggish Halloween costume.
2. A Wizard
Same thing – nothing unusual, but how many men actually dress up as a proper wizard? You can look like Gandalf by getting a long white beard, and going for a long hooded cloak with one your wife’s dresses underneath. A cane with a skull on top (also online) or a cut sapling painted silver would make a great wand or staff, and there you are: Gandalf in all his glory! A similar velvet cape and cloak is available for your children: Gandalf and son! That’s unusual!
3. Anne Boleyn
The ghost of Henry VIII’s beheaded second queen, Anne Boleyn, is said to haunt Hampton Court and the Tower of London. Purchase an Anne Boleyn outfit online and then fashion a piece of white stiff cardboard into a collar that goes to the top of your head – leave room for you to see through and paint it a suitable color. Then get a white ball or paper mache head, paint some features on it, add a wig and Anne Boleyn hat, and go the party holding it in your hand. Better still, you can often find false heads in joke or Halloween stores.
4. Highwayman
You can purchase the outfit of a highwayman online for your son (or husband!): a full length cloak of black denim with a high collar hiding the face, and the proper cuffs and buttons. Cut a sapling as a staff or find a toy matchlock pistol, and use that for trick or treat! Not one of your traditional ideas for Halloween costumes, but who would fail to treat a highwayman standing at their door!
5. The Snow Queen
The Snow Queen was a very wicked character, and it is easy to dress up like her if you have a fabulous white faux fur cape that covers you from head to toe. You can decide what to wear underneath – if anything! With a satin lining this is an astounding costume, and believe me, people will be looking at you. So it’s probably best to wear something underneath! However, it is suitable wear for the end of October, and fabulous for a Halloween party. One of the more unusual ideas for Halloween costumes.
6. Hogwarts School Robe
Back to witches and wizards again, but not so boring and traditional with a Hogwarts School robe, made exactly as the original in the Harry Potter movies. The Hogwarts School robe even has a pocket for Harry’s wand. Make sure he has one! You can get this robe online and all it takes is some normal school clothes to go with it and you or your son will be Harry Potter. Take a broomstick with you, preferably a Nimbus 2000 or even a Firebolt!
7. Finally: The Burned Witch
Get yourself a wheelbarrow or small cart. Put on some ashes from the fire or a pile of wood ashes, with a few old bones from the butcher sticking out of the pile. Dress up in a medieval monk’s hood, and push the wheelbarrow asking for money to keep the burned witch dead. If you don’t get enough she will arise on the stroke of midnight, October 31st, and curse all who don’t pay.
If you can find a real witch, all the better. However, these seven unusual ideas for Halloween costumes should give you a starting point for your own ideas. It’s a time of year when anything goes – up to a point! Have a great time and enjoy yourselves.
