Important Web Design Techniques That You Should Avoid

There may not be a perfect web design because every person has their own idea of perfection but in every web page that you have to design. Even if you cannot ensure for it to be flawless, you should at least try to avoid the common mistakes the people make; especially since many people seem to be committing these mistakes repeatedly. Mistakes can be a problem not only to newbie designers, because even experts make mistakes from time to time. A number of designers focus their attention much on other things and forget to realise that the visitor’s patience is a great thing to factor in. They get so wrapped up with going for their vision, that they forget all the other things. Therefore, here is a list of some of the common mistakes that people make with web design. The purpose for this is to make you aware; and to so help you avoid them for yourself, in the future.

– You might think that fancy fonts will make your site look attractive and quite elegant, but you have to be careful when picking fonts because not all “nice” fonts are readable on all types of computers. Sometimes it is safer for you to choose the more basic fonts to make sure that they can be read by all your readers, coming from locations all over the world.

– Try not to put too much content into your website because this will give your reader a headache. Do not play with your reader’s patience by stuffing your page with a lot of unnecessary stuff. Prioritise and conceptualise so that the only things that make it to your page will be the things that matter the most. You should consider making all your information readily available, especially for visitors who do not have all the time in the world. Use bullet points, headers and sub-headers, so you can help your visitors make easy scans through your page.

– For quite some time, HTML tables had been the most widely used for creating page layouts but recently CSS has proved its worth. CSS is slowly becoming the more reliable; as it allows faster manipulation. If you could, it would be great if you could avoid using HTML because you may just encounter more problems with it.

– Although Flash designs are quite impressive, it is not always necessary to have one because it will only take your site a lot longer to load. It will be too time-consuming that visitors may grow tired waiting for every page to load and just leave the page and quite entirely.

– Although it may seem cool, do not try to make your visitors registers because that short registration box will easily throw them off and cause them to hit the exit button without even thinking twice. Give them the option to leave their email address, for exclusive updates about your business; but for important contact details, make sure that these could be accessed easily.

– Do not make your visitors treat your site like a scavenger hunt of some sort where they would have to look for links to certain pages all over the site. You should provide them with a navigation bar or a menu that they can easily go through. More importantly, if you are going to provide them links, make sure that they are not empty. A lot of websites make a mistake of publishing websites with hardly any useable content in it. They seem perfect; they look complete; but when you begin to click on the links provided you will realise that it will just lead you nowhere. Also, if you are going to make external links, it is nice to let your readers know that clicking such link will lead out of your page.
