Having a stun gun for self defense is a great idea. Time after time stun guns have proven themselves as effective tools for self defense. But there is an element that must be taken into consideration for every self defense weapon. The owner of a self defense weapon must know how to take care of it or it may fail them when they need it most. He must know how to maintain it in good shape or do regular care in order to optimize its functions and effectiveness.

Owning a stun gun is one of the first steps toward defending yourself. But if you don’t know how to maintain your stun guns health, then how can it properly help you? How will you know that it functions properly if you do not know how to check it out. Here are some tips to help you out.

One of the greatest benefits of owning a stun gun for self defense is that there is very little maintenance required. This is dramatically different than owning a gun. A gun requires a lot of maintenance in order to stay in working order, but this isn’t the case with a stun gun.

If you own a stun gun then you need to know how to take care of it. Though there is little involved in maintaining a stun gun, you still need to know that little bit of information. This few hints will tell you what to do and what not to do when you have one as a form of self defense.

Your stun gun needs batteries. You can use rechargeable batteries, but if you do, then you need to bear in mind that they need to be recharged often. They lose their power over time. Non-rechargeable batteries have a longer shelf life, but ultimately the choice is up to you.

To check if there is enough power, you need to give your stun gun a test run. When doing this, do not hold the switch down for more than a half second. Any more than a second will damage your stun gun. A half second is plenty to see if your stun gun is working properly. Plus, if you give your stun gun a “test” when confronted with an attacker, the attacker may flee just at the sound of the stun gun or at the sight of the sparks of electricity in between the electrodes.

To keep your stun gun in working order you shouldn’t leave your stun gun subjected to extreme temperatures. This is why you shouldn’t leave your stun gun in your vehicle or outside for long periods of time. Instead, try to keep your stun gun with you at all times and as close to room temperature as possible so that the batteries maintain their power. They can be affected when exposed to extremes in temperature.

If you follow these simple maintenance tips, then you will reap the great benefits of your stun gun. Ignore them and you may find yourself in grave danger.
