Tidy Kitchen Tips For Busy Moms

These days, being a mother is a delicate balancing act. In this day and age, many women work to support their families. It doesn’t matter if you are a single mom or happily married – the reality of modern life means that you need to work. And whether you are working from home or commuting to an office every day, it means that you have a whole set of extra responsibilities. Where our grandmothers and maybe our mothers were purely involved with raising the children and looking after the home, we have to juggle these responsibilities with the demands of holding down a job.

Indeed, earning a steady income comes with a price tag – it is very hard to be able to keep the house clean and tidy if we are out all day, and when we get home we need to give our children our undivided attention. Some things can be pushed off till the weekend, but other things, such as laundry, food preparation, and basic hygiene need to be taken care of on a constant and daily basis.

One of the most important places to keep clean and tidy is the kitchen. An overly dirty kitchen can be a health hazard, not to mention the unpleasant smell and atmosphere that it creates. So how can a busy mom keep her kitchen the way it should be, without having to pay for hired help (which is beyond the reach of many women, even if they are working)?

Perhaps the tips below will help:

– Make a list of five basic tasks that you always make sure to do before you go to bed: wash the dishes, put away any food or liquid that needs to be in the refrigerator, sweep the floor, wipe down the countertops, and empty the garbage. These five simple tasks, which take only a few minutes each, are non-negotiable, and if you do them every day it makes a huge difference to the level of hygiene in your home.

– Always put things away as soon as you have finished with them, and similarly, when preparing food clean any utensil that you used immediately. This prevents the buildup of clutter.

– Look for practical kitchen storage solutions – everything needs a specific place. Fit glass doors to your cabinets if it helps you to keep track. If you don’t have enough cupboard space – downsize. And in the case of small kitchens, think about adding shelves or hanging pans from the walls in a decorative but practical pattern

– Keep it simple. If you are working full time, you don’t need to come home feeing exhausted and then make a gourmet supper each night. Look for nutritious, easy recipes that are quick to prepare and involve as little time and mess as possible. This does not mean living off “fast food”, which is unhealthy. It is a question of finding one-pot meals, using a crock pot, or making quick and easy vegetable salads, stews, pastas, and soups. There is a wealth of quick recipes out there that will taste every bit as good as the more complicated cordon bleu stuff – but without even a tenth of the effort involved.
