Closing Time
As all pool owners must know, there is a need for you to close your pool for the winter. Sadly and still, some pool owners are confused or worse, are misinformed on the proper steps on how to properly close their pool. Well, no worries, here are the appropriate ways for any pool owner to close their pool for winter.
Note: These types are good for both for in ground and above ground pools.
1. Run your filter for 24 hours straight a day before you close your pool. You have to remember that when you close your pool, there will be no chance for you to do this. This will clean and clear out any dirt and debris before your pool for the cold season.
2. Run your pool vacuum on the night before you close your pool. This equipment and practice will help your filter in sanitizing your pool.
3. Take out your water test strips or any water test kit. It is time for you to test your water. Be reminded that you have to make sure that your water is in perfect condition before you cover up your pool. Components that you have to look out for are:
– pH levels
– Alkalinity levels
– Calcium Status
– Chlorine or Bromine
4. This is also timely for you to put in a healthy dose of algaecide. You will be closing your pool for a whole season and it is most likely that your pool’s surfaces, walls and flooring will become infested with algal blooms. Apply a bottle’s worth of algaecide in your pool. This will surely keep those pesky out of your priced possession.
5. This is also the time for you to shock you pool. A pool shock is a very powerful ingredient that will most definitely help your pool dismiss bacteria, algae and other bad microorganisms. Microorganisms will ruin your pool’s overall structure, be it an in ground or an above ground pool. These will also make your pool very unsafe to use. Germs will then give the swimmer an awful case of allergies and infections. We wouldn’t want that right? (Note: If you have a solar cover, do not put it on your pool as it will demobilize your pool shock.)
6. Lower your pool water to half of its full measure.
7. Remove all the directional fittings from your swimming pool and replace them with freeze plugs. This will prohibit your pool’s engine and insides to freeze up in winter.
8. Cover your skimmer opening with aquador or an ice swathe. This will serve the same purpose as your freeze plugs.
9. Inflate your plastic pillow and secure it on the center of your pool. (this is for above ground pools.)
10. Take out and disengage all pool accessories.
11. It is now time for you to cover up your pool. Make certain that you have a very durable pool cover as it will protect your pool for the whole winter season. Fasten your pool cover with clips and water tubes.
12. Detach your filter and degrease it. Let it dry completely before placing it inside your house.
13. Clean all your pool’s accessories and cleaning equipment before you store them.
Take care of your pool by properly closing it for the cold season.
