When you think of a classic novel, what comes to mind are books like, “Oliver Twist”, “Treasure Island” or possibly “Moby Dick” and “Jane Eyre”! While there is no denying the lasting appeal of these novels, the American Pulp Fiction from the early 1900s to the 1950s is an art form in a class of its own.

The genres of the pulps are an edgier pop culture that routinely entertained millions of adoring fans who eagerly awaited the next issue to be released. These were dime novels printed on cheap pulp paper with spectacular, graphic and colorful if sometimes lurid or dark illustrations. No other American art form endured such a lasting appeal as the story lines and prose of the pulps. It was pop culture at its elemental.

Authors began to dabble in science fiction and fantasy stories as evidenced by stories such as “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, “The Time Machine” and “Alice in Wonderland”. These and other stories opened the door to a style of writing that had never been explored and an explosion of wildly wonderful stories began to emerge by budding and seasoned authors alike.

The pulps became a rip-roaring adventure of the invincible warriors of the Far East, dangerous gals, the witty and smooth super sleuths, aerial wonders and the panoramic but utterly Wild West, to the unexplored realms of space. Fantasy was also taking shape in unusual ways such as dark fantasy and horror. It was also the beginnings of the beloved super hero we continue to be fascinated with. Before the comic books of the 50s and 60s, the likes of “Spider man”, “Batman”, “Zorro” and the “Shadow” were born.

So influential were these stories that by the time television and movies began their era, the pulps gave the writers and producers an unlimited amount of ideas that in turn translated perfectly on the big and small screen, as well as the stage.

To fully appreciate the pulps, one must go back to the original great pulp writers who contributed so much to our entertainment. Such as, Dashiell Hammett, H. P. Lovecraft, Raymond Chandler, L. Ron Hubbard, Issac Asimov, Ernest Hemmingway and many others. When you read their stories you begin to see how much they have shaped our imaginations and you see the origins of some of our most favorite characters.

There is a renaissance happening with the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction as many of these stories are being lovingly restored with original cover art as well as being produced in audio book form with talented voice actors and cinema quality sound effects.

Old timers fondly remember the pulp magazines but a new generation is being reintroduced to the pulps in schools, libraries and online. The savvy technologically inclined generation of today is discovering the roots of their favorite characters. It is a history lesson of sorts but in fiction.
